Warriors inducting 8 into Hall of Fame

Cedar Rapids Washington will induct eight new members into its Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday, Feb. 14 between games of a varsity basketball doubleheader against Jefferson.

Kirk Abernathy, Steve Puk, Maurice Blue, Peter Nau, Mack Jilek, Dusty Wadlington, Ashley Ernst and Dr. Scott Nau will be honored that night.

Abernathy (Class of 1981) participated in track, football and basketball. He was a state champion in the medley relay and 4x100 relay and a track All-American. He played football at Drake and twice made all-conference in college.

Warriors stymie Hempstead, 44-35

Maurice Arrington scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds, and Jared Printy added 10 points to lead Washington past Dubuque Hempstead, 44-35, Tuesday in MVC boys basketball at Washington.

The Warriors (3-13, 3-8) built a 20-15 lead by halftime and led by 10 points at the end of the third quarter.

Montaves Anderson added seven assists and four steals for Washington.

No.8 Wash girls fall to No.4 Waukee

No.4 Waukee zoomed out to a 12-point lead in the first quarter and cruised past No.8 Washington, 64-50, Saturday in a non-conference battle of top 10 ranked Class 5A girls basketball teams.

Taylor Wingert scored 20 points to lead Waukee (15-0). Reilly Jacobson had 16 points.

Dani Franklin scored 21 points for Washington (14-4).

New Hampton knocks off Wash at line

New Hampton outscored Washington by 10 points at the free-throw line and beat the Warriors, 58-48, Saturday afternoon in a non-conference boys basketball game at Washington.

Washington (2-13) made only 7 of 20 free throw attempts.

New Hampton (15-0) cashed in 17 of 27 free throws. The Chickasaws are ranked No.2 in Class 2A.

Drew Hoeger led Washington with nine points.

Lions escape upset bid by Warriors

Jordan Bohannon scored 15 points Friday night and Nic Uhlir netted 14 as the Linn-Mar Lions held off Washington, 56-52, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game at Linn-Mar.

Steven Kramer led Washington with 19 points and had a chance to give the Warriors a 55-54 lead in the final seconds, but his 3-point shot rolled around the rim and fell out.

Kramer hit five 3-pointers for Washington (2-12, 2-8).

Jon Schlotterback contributed 11 points for Linn-Mar (9-6, 7-3).
