Wash-Kennedy doubles to meet in semis

Neither was seeded coming into the girls high school state tennis tournament, but either a doubles team from Cedar Rapids Washington or Kennedy will be playing for the Class 2A championship Friday afternoon.

After pulling off a pair of second round upsets Thursday at the Veterans Memorial Tennis Center, Warriors Lilly Hartman and Rina Moore face Cougars Sarah Lasecki and Jessica Pedersen in Friday morning's semifinals.

The winner will play for the title against the top-seeded Urbandale team or fourth-seeded Ames.

Kennedy girls knock off Warriors

Last season, the Kennedy girls went into the state soccer tournament ranked seventh and ended up taking the title by beating the top three teams in three days.

They’re hoping the underdog role pays off this year as well.

“We’re excited to prove everyone wrong again,” said Cougar captain Tory Harman after leading her squad into next week’s regional finals with a 4-1 win over Washington Wednesday night at Kingston Stadium.

“We’ve had kind of a bumpy season, and a lot of people have written us off. So we’re out to prove something.”

Hall of Fame swim coach Krizan dies

Hal Krizan, a Hall of Fame coach who led Cedar Rapids Washington to 11 state titles in boys swimming, died Saturday at age 92.

Krizan founded the Washington swim program in 1956. He led the Warriors to 10 straight titles from 1964 to 1973.

Krizan is a member of the Iowa Swimming Hall of Fame and the National Swimming Hall of Fame.

"He truly put Washington swimming 'on the map' from the beginning of the school's history," said Chris Cruise, the current boys swim coach at Washington. "He started the tradition of excellence that was surpassed and continued by Coach Voss, but it was Coach Krizan who put the Warriors on the path to excellence.

Kamin in 7th at state golf meet

PANORA - Cedar Rapids Washington's MJ Kamin shot a 9-over par 81 Tuesday and is in seventh place after the first round of the Class 5A state girls golf tournament at Lake Panorama National Golf Course.

Kamin is five strokes behind Anna Cullinan of Pleasant Valley and Kelsy Shay of Waukee.

Kennedy's Ali Lindo is tied for 12th with an 85. She is nine shots back.

Prairie's Taylor Utter shot a 95 and is tied for 33rd.

Bergstrom honored in MVC soccer

The Mississippi Valley Conference soccer coaches have named Austin Bergstrom of Cedar Rapids Washington as the Athlete of the Year in the Valley Division for 2013.

Mike Robertson and Steve Robertson, the co-coaches at Kennedy, were named Coaches of the Year in the Mississippi Division.

Jack Sundermann and Jacob Bjornsen joined Bergstrom as first-team selections in the Valley Division from Washington. Ben Johnson (Linn-Mar), Hunter Wong (Linn-Mar), Isaac Frisch (Xavier), Eli Smith (Xavier), Logan Rinderknecht (Prairie) and Matt Christen (Prairie) also were named first-team picks in the Valley Division.
