Warriors fall to Dubuque Wahlert

Laveechie Williams scored 14 points to lead the Washington boys basketball team in a 62-44 loss to Dubuque Wahlert in a Mississippi Valley Conference game Tuesday at Washington.

Keion Wills added 10 points for the Warriors (6-14, 3-12).

Riley Till scored 16 points for the Golden Eagles (15-5, 10-5) and David Wedewer added 15 points.

Vance commits to Iowa State football

Cedar Rapids Washington junior O'Rien Vance has committed to the Iowa State football program, he announced on Tuesday.

Vance, 6-foot-33, 210 pounds, was a Class 4A all-state linebacker last season. He led the Warriors with 101 tackles, including 25 tackles for losses.

Vance also played tight end for Washington, which finished 10-2 in 2015 and reached the quarterfinals of the state playoffs.

Kelley snaps state mark in 500 free

MARSHALLTOWN  – Washington’s Cameron Kelley and Nick Saulnier entered Saturday’s state swimming meet seeded first in two individual events each.

Pretty lofty expectations since neither had ever won a state title.

And both would be racing against two super swimmers from Iowa City West who are the among the few Iowa preps (male or female) who have qualified for this summer’s Olympic trials.

But by turning in what their coach called “absolutely awesome” performances, the two Warriors came through under pressure.

In what might be termed mild upsets despite his high seeding, junior Kelley won the 200 yard freestyle, in 1:39.50, and then set a new state record in claiming the grueling 500 freestyle in 4:29.96. His times in both events were fast enough for All-American consideration.

Xavier girls knock off Washington

Jamison Janson rolled a 193 game and a 334 series to lead the Xavier girls bowling team to a 2,234 to 2,124 win over Washington in a Mississippi Valley Conference meet Friday at May City Bowl.

Shania Christensen had a 198 game and a 390 series to lead the Warriors.
