Xavier High School - Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Xavier netters trim J-Hawks, 5-4

Kyle D'Mello, Mitch Steffenmeier, Grant Hunt, Ben Curley and Seth Schowalter won their singles matches Wednesday as the Xavier Saints trimmed Jefferson, 5-4, in a Mississippi Valley Conference tennis meet at Jefferson.

Jacob Donald of Jefferson defeated Bill Young at No.1 singles, 4-6, 6-2, (10-2). The J-Hawks won all three doubles matches.

Kamin, Bertsch share 2nd at Hunters Ridge

Elmcrest Country Club in Cedar Rapids opened a state-of-the-art indoor facility this winter to help golfers work on their game when it was too cold or wet to play outside.

MJ Kamin of Washington and Maddie Bertsch of Xavier spent as much time there as they could and are glad they did.

Kamin and Bertsch shot 11-over-par 83's and shared runnerup honors at the Linn-Mar Invitational Wednesday afternoon at Hunters Ridge to establish themselves as two of the top female golfers in the Metro this year.

Rachele Miller of Pleasant Valley won the tournament with an 8-over 80 to help her team claim the team championship.

Cougars, Saints are No.1 in boys soccer

The Kennedy Cougars and Xavier Saints moved to the top of the boys soccer rankings Tuesday.

Kennedy replaced Prairie as the No.1 team in Class 3A. Xavier replaced Dubuque Wahlert as the No.1 club in Class 2A.

Prairie fell to No.4 in Class 3A. Washington is ranked sixth and Linn-Mar is tied for 12th.

Berutti & Armstrong lead Saints to soccer win

Marissa Berutti and Kayla Armstrong teamed up for a pair of goals that led Class 2A No.1 Xavier past Bettendorf, 2-0, Saturday morning at Prairie's John Wall Field.

Berutti scored on a header off a pass from Armstrong with 37:45 remaining in the first half.

Armstrong scored off a pass from Berutti with 7:31 left in the game.

Xavier put only four shots on goal in the match, but converted two. Betttendorf put 13 shots on goal and Xavier keeper Sara Chicchelly deflected all of them.

The game was switched from Xavier's field to the artificial surface at Prairie.

 

Xavier boys blank Kennedy, 9-0

Xavier won all nine matches and shutout Kennedy, 9-0, Tuesday in boys tennis at Kennedy.

Xavier's Bill Young beat Kennedy's Quinn Jamrock, 6-2, 6-1, at No.1 singles.

Young and Kyle D'Mello combined for a 6-2, 6-3, win at No.1 doubles.
