Saints soar like eagles at MVC golf

The members of the Xavier High School golf team thought Monday might be a good day for one of them to fire an eagle at Twin Pines.

They were wrong. Three of them did.

The Saints rode their surge of eagles to a 26-shot bulge in the race for top honors in the Valley Division of the Mississippi Valley Conference standings.

Xavier has a 36-hole total of 588 for a 26-shot lead over Linn-Mar heading into the final round at Hunters Ridge on Sept. 24.

Stovie suffered torn ACL; out for year

Xavier High School tailback Cal Stovie sustained a serious knee injury against Prairie Friday night and will not play again this year.

Stovie injured his knee when he was tackled after a 55-yard run on his first carry of the second half against the Hawks.

"Unfortunately, not good news for Cal," Xavier Coach Duane Schulte reported Monday morning. "He tore his ACL and is done for the season."

Saints climb to 6th in Register poll

The Xavier Saints climbed from No. 7 to No. 6 in the Des Moines Register's Class 4A football rankings Sunday morning.

The Saints (3-0) walloped Prairie, 48-14, Friday night in a battle of unbeatens.

Ankeny replaced Cedar Falls atop the 4A poll. The Tigers are second, followed by Dowling, Bettendorf and Iowa City West.

No. 7 Saints go 2-2 at North Scott

ELDRIDGE - Xavier went 2-2 and was beaten in the semifinals Saturday at the North Scott Invitational volleyball tournament.

Xavier, ranked seventh in Class 4A, beat Burlington 21-13, 21-7, and DeWitt Central, 21-9, 21-12, in pool play. The Saints also lost were beaten by North Scott, 21-16, 21-9 and finished 2-1 in their pool.

Bettendorf knocked Xavier out of the tournament in three sets in the semifinals, 23-25, 25-19, 16-14.

 

Polished Saints belt Prairie, 48-14

No high school team has ever played a perfect football game, but the Xavier Saints came pretty darn close Friday night at John Wall Field.

There were A's and A-pluses all over the place.

The seventh-ranked Saints excelled in all facets of the game and belted the Prairie Hawks, 48-14, in a Mississippi Valley Conference battle of unbeaten clubs.
