Sagers' 37 leads Xavier at Jones Park

Ben Sagers shot a 37 to lead Xavier to a five-stroke win Thursday in a quadrangular boys golf meet at Jones Park.

Jelinek Bowl? Nope, just Saints vs. Hawks

Craig Jelinek does not want Friday night's big football game between the Xavier Saints and Prairie Hawks to be about him in any way, shape or form.

It looks like he'll get his wish.

Jelinek, 60, compiled a 106-96 record in 21 years as Prairie's head football coach. He retired after the 2010 campaign, but returned to the sidelines this season as a volunteer assistant for Xavier.

The Saints visit Prairie Friday night, which means Jelinek will stand on the visitor's sideline and will head into the visitor's locker room at John Wall Field after spending all those years as head coach of the home team.

Little Hawks nip Cougars, Saints at CRANDIC golf

In a match as tight as size-9 shoes on size-10 feet, Iowa City High claimed the CRANDIC boys golf meet by one stroke over Kennedy and two strokes over Xavier on a sun-kissed Ellis Park course Tuesday.

Xavier boasted the medalist with a 73 by junior Matt Junge, but the Little Hawks’ Zach MacMillan came in second at 74 and Grant Simpson was third at 75. Kennedy’s top finisher, senior Harrison Moore, also tied Simpson for third.

Iowa City High put three golfers in the top 10 en route to its team total of 311, while Kennedy (312) and Xavier (313) placed two each. And that was the difference.

Saints claim volleyball title at Washington

The back of Xavier volleyball coach Barb Sullivan’s jersey reads, “No limits.”

And after her Saints defeated Class 4A third-ranked Solon Saturday afternoon to win the Washington Warrior 12-team tournament, she’s even higher on her veteran squad’s prospects this season.

Ranked 10th in 4A coming into the 21st annual tourney, the Xavier girls dropped their opening match in pool play to Solon but then sailed back to win their next four outings to force a rematch in the championship final.

They took the deciding match in three sets, 21-18, 13-21, 15-10, denying the perennially powerful Spartans their second straight Warrior Invitational title. Solon had defeated Marion last year in the finals.
