Saints will scratch where it itches

The last time Reggie Schulte played a football game for the Xavier Saints, he completed 23 of 27 passes for 312 yards and two touchdowns in a 33-31 loss to Pleasant Valley in the Class 4A playoffs.

The kid can throw, but his father -- Xavier Coach Duane Schulte -- is not ready to give Reggie the keys to the kingdown and make it "Air Schulte" this year.

"I always liked what Hayden Fry used to say," Coach Schulte remarked Tuesday. "Scratch where it itches and take what the defense gives you.

"We'll do what we have to do to try and get first downs. I think that's the bottom line."

Sagers leads Saints to MVC golf title

DUBUQUE - Xavier golf coach Tim O'Brien strolled into the high school gym Wednesday in search of history.

He knew the Saints had won a Mississippi Valley Conference title a few years ago and wanted to refresh his memory, just in case his team finished in first place again this year.

"I walked in there last night just to look at the banner, and it was 2001," O'Brien said proudly Thursday afternoon.

Ingwersen leads Xavier parade at Pribyl

Cedar Rapids Xavier High School junior John Ingwersen won the Rotary Pribyl Junior Golf Tournament on Friday by firing a final round of 73 at Elmcrest Country Club.

Ingwersen finished the 72-hole event at 73-76-78-73--300 to win the tournament by five shots over Matt Junge of Xavier.

The Saints placed five golfers in the top-10 as Ben Sagers finished fourth, Rob Thinnes seventh and John Drahozal ninth.

Kennedy golfers claimed three spots in the top 10 in the non-school event with Conner Koberg in third place, Cole Murdock fifth and Davis Sutton eighth.

Stolley, Mattke named academic all-state

Jake Stolley of Linn-Mar and Mack Mattke of Xavier have received Honorable Mention on the IHSBCA Academic All-State Teams.

The 26th All-Academic Team was selected by the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association. The selections were based on outstanding academic, moral and athletic characteristics.

Stolley, a left-handed pitcher and first baseman, plans to enroll at Northwestern University and has been invited to join the baseball team as a walk-on.

Mattke, a first baseman, catcher and pitcher, plans to enroll at Purdue and has been invited to join the ballclub as a walk-on.

 

Feltes, Bergstrom, Gilmer make boys all-state soccer

Ben Feltes of Kennedy, Austin Bergstrom of Washington and Chad Gilmer of Xavier have been named first team all-state by the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association.

Feltes and Bergstrom were honored in Class 3A and Gilmer was cited in Class 2A. Feltes was named the all-state goalkeeper.

Ali Al-Yasseri of Jefferson, Kimu Kasha of Washington, Austin Reutzel of Prairie, Matt Shannon of Kennedy and Andrew Patience of Jefferson were named second team all-state in Class 3A. Patience was named as the goalkeeper.
