Lansing, Esker win state tennis title

WATERLOO - Jon Lansing and Charlie Esker of Xavier enjoyed a remarkable run at the Class 1A state tennis tournament Saturday and captured the first doubles title in school history.

Lansing and Esker topped Luke Willis and Ryan Willis, 6-4, 6-2, in the championship at the Byrnes Park Tennis Center in Waterloo.

Lansing, a junior, and Esker, a senior, were the No. 1 seed in the state tournament and the Willis twins were the No. 2 seed.

Lansing and Esker went 4-0 at the state tournament and did not a set. They won 6-2, 6-0 in the first round, 6-2, 6-0 in the quarterfinals, 6-2, 6-0 again in the semifinals and 6-4, 6-2 in the finals.

"It was pretty awesome," said Xavier Coach Jim Potts. "They're playing their best tennis right now. It's a good time to do it."

Lansing and Esker raised their record to 16-5 for the season.

Potts said the players communicate very well on the court.

"Jon's strength would be his control. He's always in control," the coach said. "And he's phenomenal at the net. A great net player.

"Charlie serves well. He's also very good at the net. Quick hands."

Alex Hinrichs and Ryan Jasper of Xavier also had a good weekend at the state tournament as Xavier's No. 2 doubles team. They won three of five matches and placed seventh out of 16 teams.

Lansing, Esker reach tennis semifinals

WATERLOO - Jon Lansing and Charlie Esker of Xavier won both of their  doubles matches Friday at the Class 1A state tennis tournament Friday  at the Byrnes Park Tennis Center in Waterloo.

Lansing and Esker, who are the No. 1 seeds in the doubles competition,  whipped a team from Ballard, 6-2, 6-0 in the opening round. The Saints  then topped their opponents from Spencer by the identical score of  6-2, 6-0.

Lansing and Esker will face the No. 4 seeds from Glenwood in the  semifinals Saturday morning. The final round is scheduled for Saturday  afternoon.

Alex Hinrichs and Ryan Jasper of Xavier lost in the first round of the  doubles competition to the No. 2 seeds from Waverly-Shell Rock, 6-2,  6-3.

Hinrichs and Jasper rebounded with two victories in the consolation  bracket and are still alive for fifth place at the state tournament.  They beat a team from Creston, 6-4, 6-2, and topped a team from  Maharishi in a tiebreaker.

No. 13 Xavier softball sweeps Wahlert

The Xavier softball team cruised to a pair of victories over Dubuque  Wahlert in the Mississippi Valley Conference Thursday night.

The Saints won the first game, 10-0, in six innings. They captured the  second game, 12-0, in three innings.

The games were played at the Jefferson High School diamond due to  drainage issues at the Xavier field.

Maria Steffen pitched a three-hitter with nine strikeouts for Xavier  in the first game. Charlotte Richards was 3-for-3 with two RBIs.

Ellie Malecek tossed a two-hitter with five strikeouts in the second  game. Hannah Williams went 2-for-2 with a double, home run and three  RBIs.

Charli Patten and Keera Ball were also 2-for-2 in the second game.  Ball had two RBIs.

Xavier (3-1) is ranked No. 13 in Class 4A.

Xavier's games against Iowa City Regina Friday were rained out.

Saints roll into substate soccer finals

The Xavier boys soccer team is seeking its 15th trip to the state soccer tournament in the last 16 years.

One more victory will make it happen.

The fourth-ranked Saints defeated Mid-Prairie, 8-1, in the Class 2A substate semifinals Wednesday with a dominating performance at Heco Field.

Xavier (11-4) will face Mount Pleasant (11-7) in the substate finals Saturday at noon at Xavier, with the winner advancing to the state  tournament.

Luke Duball and Thomas Bean had two goals for the Saints Wednesday. Tyler Steffensmeier, Nick Koechner, Will Hanigan and Brennan Lloyd also scored for Xavier.

Duball collected three assists in the match. Bean and Hanigan had two assists. Michael Glaven also had an assist.

Xavier baseball team tops Jefferson

Sam Meyers pitched six strong innings Tuesday night as the Xavier  Saints topped Jefferson, 6-2, in a consolation game of the Vrbicek  Metro Tournament at Ken Charipar Field.

The Saints scored four runs in the seventh inning to snap a 2-2 tie  and secure the victory.

Meyers allowed two runs on six hits, with two strikeouts and two  walks. Jack Lemke had two hits for Xavier (1-1).

Chris Haring and Tyler Unkel had two hits for Jefferson (0-2).

Xavier advanced to face Kennedy for fifth place in the tournament on  Wednesday. Jefferson met Mount Vernon for seventh place.
