Kirkwood Community College - Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Larson triples her fun with No. 4 Eagles

Kirkwood Coach Kim Muhl has given Kirsten Larson the green light to shoot a 3-pointer any time she wants.

That's smart coaching.

Larson broke the school record with nine 3-pointers and scored 27 points Wednesday night as the fourth-ranked Eagles spanked DMACC, 76-52, for their 14th straight win in an ICCAC conference game at Johnson Hall.

Larson, a sophomore from Belvidere, Ill., snapped the old school mark of eight triples by Diamon Beckford during the 2010-11 campaign.

Larson drilled three triples in the first 65 seconds and hit her fourth with the game barely three minutes old as the Eagles (18-4, 6-0) jumped to a quick 19-4 lead.

"There were a lot of wide-open looks and my team found me at the right time and I just knocked them down," she said modestly. "My shot just felt good tonight and everything was going good."

Muhl nets 750th win as Kirkwood coach

IOWA FALLS - Kim Muhl collected his 750th victory as the head coach of the Kirkwood women's basketball program Wednesday night with a 74-39 romp past Ellsworth in an ICCAC conference game in Iowa Falls.

Muhl has compiled a flashy 750-139 record with six NJCAA Division II national titles in 26 years. His winning percentage is a gaudy 84.4 percent during that time.

True to his nature, Muhl downplayed the milestone. "It makes you feel a little older," he joked during the bus ride home.

Muhl cast doubt on whether he'll keep coaching until he hits 1,000 wins. "I doubt it. I don't think I'll be around for 250 more wins," he said.

He did not rule it out, however. "'I don't know' is a better answer," he said.

Martensen sparks No. 4 Eagles by SCC

The Kirkwood Eagles needed a new power forward in the starting lineup Wednesday night with All-American Ariel Sneed sidelined with a knee injury.

Anna Martensen handled the call in style.

Martensen made her first start of the season and responded with 18 points and nine rebounds as the fourth-ranked Eagles bounced Southeastern Community College, 78-62, in a conference game at Johnson Hall.

Martensen, a 5-foot-10 sophomore from Belvidere, Ill., normally plays about 16 minutes per game with averages of 7.2 points and 4.5 rebounds. She played 31 minutes Wednesday and more than doubled her production.

"Tiring," she said with a weary smile after her career night. "I'm not used to that. I had to catch my breath a couple of times."

Ukah helps No.12 Eagles dunk Lincoln

The public address announcer at Kirkwood basketball games loves calling Chike Ukah's name after the talented big guy from Iowa City West dunks the ball.

Chick-KAAAY UUUUU-kah!, he yells as the crowd eats it up.

There were a lot of Chick-KAAAY UUUUU-kah moments Tuesday night as he helped the 12th-ranked Eagles defeat Lincoln, 82-68, in a non-conference game at Johnson Hall.

With starting center Joe Tagarelli nursing a sore knee, Ukah moved into the starting lineup and played a career-high 32 minutes and finished with 14 points, five rebounds, four blocks, two assists and several crowd-pleasing slams.

"He can provide something different than anybody else on our team with his length," said Kirkwood Coach Bryan Petersen. "He's a great kid, he's a smart kid, he wants to get better, he's always working hard. It's nice to see him get the benefits in a game."
