Kirkwood volleyball team ranked No. 1

The Kirkwood volleyball team jumped into the No. 1 spot in the Division II national rankings Wednesday by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).

The Eagles were ranked No. 2 last week. They replaced Parkland at the top of the poll.

Kirkwood (22-2) will host No. 8 DMACC Wednesday night at 6:30.

Eagles, Mustangs hosting women's jamboree

Kirkwood Community College and Mount Mercy University will host a women's basketball jamboree this Sunday at the two schools.

Six junior college teams and six four-year schools will compete. The jamboree begins at 10 a.m. and ends with the final contests at 4 p.m.

Eagles finish 4th at La Crosse golf

LA CROSSE, Wis. - The Kirkwood Eagles placed fourth out of 10 teams at the Ronnie Eastman Invitational golf tournament at the La Crosse Country Club Monday.

Blaine Buhr finished 15th for the Eagles with rounds of 80 and 75 for a 36-hole total of 155.

Bennett Laxton led Viterbo to the team championship at 1-over-par 145.

KCC golfers ranked 7th in nation

The Kirkwood men's golf team is ranked seventh in the nation and first in its region by GolfStats.com.

Carson Whittington of Kirkwood is ranked 99th among junior college golfers in the country with a 74.13 stroke average.

Kirkwood's region includes all the junior colleges in Iowa except Indian Hills and Iowa Western.

 

No.2 Eagles knock off Iowa Lakes

ESTHERVILLE - Heather Poula collected 14 kills and 16 digs Thursday night as the second-ranked Kirkwood volleyball team swept Iowa Lakes, 25-12, 25-18, 27-25, in a junior college match in Estherville.

Halle Lueck provided 37 assists and seven digs for the Eagles (22-2). Becca Bell furnished eight kills and eight blocks.

Kirkwood also got important contributions from Erin Wenzel (9 kills), Megan Allmandinger (5 kills), Kensley Heater (12 digs), Nicole Snyder (11 digs) and Audrey Richards (11 digs).

   

Eagles jump to 2nd in volleyball poll

The Kirkwood Eagles climbed from No. 7 to No. 2 in the new NJCAA Division II national volleyball rankings Wednesday.

The Eagles (21-2) own an 8-2 record against ranked teams this season.

Allmandinger finds new life with Eagles

Megan Allmandinger figured her college volleyball career was over last winter when she transferred from Grand View University to Kirkwood after one semester.

Kirkwood Coach Jill Williams invited Allmandinger to join the Eagles once she learned the Linn-Mar grad was on campus, but it was a non-starter.

"She asked me to play and I said no," Allmandinger related Tuesday night. "And then a couple of months later I changed my mind and I was like, 'Yeah, I think I want to play.' And here I am."

Allmandinger, a 6-foot-1 middle blocker and outside hitter, has become an important piece of the puzzle for the seventh-ranked Eagles with her size, power and blocks.

Kirkwood raised its record to 21-2 Tuesday with a 25-19, 25-19, 25-23 victory over Marshalltown at Johnson Hall with another typically balanced attack.

No. 7 Eagles win twice at tourney

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - The seventh-ranked Kirkwood volleyball team raised its record to 20-2 Saturday with a pair of victories at the Johnson County tournament in Overland Park, Kan.

The Eagles topped Johnson County, 26-24, 28-26, 25-15, and rallied to defeat North Platte, 23-25, 25-18, 25-16, 25-16.

Erin Wenzel had 14 kills and Heather Poula added 13 kills against Johnson County. Halle Lueck provided 40 assists and 14 digs. Becca Bell, Payton Hilton and Megan Allmandinger had six blocks.

Wenzel and Poula had 11 kills against North Platte. Lueck had 40 more assists. Bell blocked 10 shots. Nicole Snyder had 16 digs.

Kirkwood went 4-0 in the tournament.

 

Whittington takes 2nd at AIB golf

PANORA - Carson Whittington of Kirkwood fired a 3-under-par 69 Saturday and finished second in the AIB Invitational at the Lake Panorama National Resort golf course.

Whittington finished with a 36-round total of 72-69=141. Lucas Boyd of AIB topped Whittington by one shot for the title.

Kirkwood placed third in the team standings behind AIB and Indian Hills.

No. 7 Eagles roll in volleyball

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - The seventh-ranked Kirkwood volleyball team rolled to a pair of 3-0 victories Friday on the first day of the Johnson County tournament in Overland Park, Kan.

The Eagles (18-2) topped Coffeyville, 25-14, 25-16, 25-17. Heather Poula had 15 kills, Halle Lueck dished out 39 assists and Kensley Heater collected 12 digs.

Kirkwood defeated Central (Neb.), 25-17, 25-15, 25-23. Erin Wenzel finished with 14 kills. Poula and Nicole Snyder had 14 digs. Lueck had 39 more assists.
