No.3 Kirkwood women fall to No.10 Tritons

FORT DODGE - The wounded Kirkwood women's basketball team dropped an 80-74 verdict at 10th-ranked Iowa Central Saturday in an ICCAC conference basketball game.

The loss dropped the third-ranked Eagles into a tie for second place in the league standings with Iowa Central with 7-2 records. NIACC stands all alone in first place with a 9-0 mark.

Hanna Haynes, a 6-foot-2 freshman, hurt her knee in practice Friday and did not play for Kirkwood. Zoe Kelso, a 5-foot-11 freshman, hurt her knee during the game and was unable to continue. Both players will be examined Monday to determine the extent of their injuries. Two other Kirkwood players have knee injuries, digging further into the team's depth.

Kirkwood signs 11 new softball players

Joe Yegge digs the long ball, but he also likes softball players who can run.

The Kirkwood coach thinks he may have sacrificed a little power to get more speed in his new recruiting class of high school seniors for the 2015 campaign, but that's OK with him.

Kirkwood led all Division II junior colleges in the country last season with 104 home runs on its way to the semifinals of the national tournament and a 57-5 record. Yegge thinks there are power hitters in the new class, but perhaps not as many.

Olson helps Eagles top prep school

Taylor Olson led the Mississippi Valley Conference in floor burns during his playing days at Cedar Rapids Jefferson High School. He’s doing the same thing for the Kirkwood Eagles.

The 6-foot-2 sophomore did a pretty good job filling out a stat line Wednesday night at Johnson Hall, leading the Eagles to a 67-55 win over ABCD Prep Academy of Des Moines with 12 points, six assists, four steals and untold hustle plays.

Olson takes pride in his work ethic and hustle.

“I try to be,” he said. “Especially in games like that. We needed a spark from somewhere and I felt like I needed to step up and do that tonight.”

Kirkwood signs 8 new baseball players

Kirkwood baseball coach Todd Rima is intrigued by the prospect of having a 6-foot-8 pitcher on the mound with his long arms, long legs and 88 mph fastball.

His name is Nick Bruno and he hails from Boylan Central Catholic High School in Rockford, Ill. He won't be here this season, but he's on his way for the 2015 campaign.

Rima has signed eight high school seniors to letters-of-intent for the 2015 season.

"Bruno is probably the most intriguing guy in our recruiting class," said Rima. "I cannot wait to see where he's at in two years.

"He's kind of the sleeper in this class. In the long run, we might have stolen one."

Kirkwood rolls to top of ICCAC race

It's late January and the Kirkwood men's basketball team is sitting atop the ICCAC standings.

If they keep playing defense like they did Wednesday night, the Eagles might stay there.

Kirkwood put the squeeze on Southwestern and stuffed the visitors, 59-30, with a superb defensive effort at Johnson Hall.

Silva helps No.4 Eagles to easy win

Kirkwood Coach Kim Muhl occasionally complains about his players and their perceived lack of effort at times, but he rarely complains about Taylor Silva.

If anything, Muhl thinks Silva sometimes tries too hard.

"She brings effort every day," Muhl said Wednesday night. "Her biggest problem, she brings too much effort sometimes and gets herself in trouble, but she's working on it.

"Great attitude," he said. "The mistakes she makes are usually because of playing hard, so it's hard to fault that a lot. You just try to correct it."

Silva made her second start of the season Wednesday at point guard and helped the Eagles defeat Southwetern, 66-44, in an ICCAC game at Johnson Hall.
