Kirkwood wins regional softball crown

FORT DODGE - The Kirkwood Eagles won a pair of games against sixth-ranked DMACC Tuesday and captured the Region XI softball title in Fort Dodge with their 44th and 45th victories in a row.

Leah Duffe hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the eighth inning as the third-ranked Eagles trimmed DMACC, 1-0, in their first meeting Tuesday.

The two clubs met again in the finals and Kirkwood had a much easier time, posting a 9-2 victory with a barrage of five home runs. Kayla Tatge, who leads the nation with 24 homers, belted two for the Eagles in the championship game.

Kirkwood (52-3) will host the district finals Thursday and Friday at the Kirkwood field. The other teams are Dawson (Mont.) and Dakota County Tech (Minn.).

Thursday's schedule has Dawson playing Dakota County Tech in the first game. The second game has Kirkwood playing the first game loser, and the Eagles will play the first game winner in the day's third game. The district finals are double-elimination.

The district champion will advance to the NJCAA Division II national tournament.

Kirkwood wins Region XI golf title

The Kirkwood men's golf team captured the NJCAA Region XI title Tuesday with a 20-stroke victory at Hunters Ridge in Marion.

The Eagles won their ninth regional title in the last 10 years.

Kirkwood (52-7) earned a spot in the national tournament in Scottsboro, Ala., on May 21-24.

No.3 Eagles win twice at tourney

FORT DODGE - Shy Saladino and Amber Logemann pitched shutouts Monday as the Kirkwood Eagles won their first two games at the NJCAA Region XI softball tournament.

Saladino (10-0) tossed a two-hitter as the third-ranked Eagles blanked Iowa Central, 6-0, in the opening round in Fort Dodge.

Logemann (21-3) pitched a one-hitter as Kirkwood defeated NIACC, 8-0, in five innings in the second round.

Gagliardi glad to be pitching for Eagles

Anthony Gagliardi has bounced around a little bit the past two years after being named an all-state pitcher at Cedar Rapids Prairie in 2011.

He enrolled at Southeastern Community College in West Burlington after graduating from Prairie, but left after one semester and pitched at Indian Hills Community College in 2012.

He returned to Cedar Rapids this year and is pitching at Kirkwood Community College, his third junior college in two years of touring the state.

"It has been a roller-coaster," he affirmed Monday.

Jones helps Kirkwood split twinbill

Nick Jones went 4-for-6 and drove in six runs Sunday as the Kirkwood Eagles split an ICCAC doubleheader with Southwestern Community College at the Kirkwood field.

Southwestern rallied for an 11-6 victory in the first game after Kirkwood had grabbed a 6-2 lead after four innings.

The Eagles romped in the nightcap, 10-1.

Eagles ride 41-game streak into playoffs

Some college softball teams have powerful hitters. Some have dominant pitchers. Others play air-tight defense.

The third-ranked Kirkwood Eagles have it all, which is why they've enjoyed a terrific regular season and are looking forward to the playoffs and a possible trip to the national tournament.

Kirkwood (48-3) will ride a 41-game winning streak into the NJCAA Division II Region XI tournament that is scheduled to begin Sunday in Fort Dodge.

KCC's Gonzalez earns national honor

Kirkwood third baseman Jairo Gonzalez has been named the NJCAA Division II National Player of the Week for his performances in eight baseball games last week.

Gonzalez, a sophomore from Florida, hit .517 with six home runs and 19 RBIs for the Eagles last week. He went 15-for-29 at the plate and scored 14 runs.

Gonzalez was named the ICCAC Player of the Week on Tuesday.

Gonzalez has a chance to win the Triple Crown in the ICCAC this season. He ranks first in the league in home runs (8), first in RBIs (44) and second in batting average (.413).

   

Regional softball tourney delayed to Sunday

The NJCAA Region XI softball tournament, scheduled to begin Thursday in Fort Dodge, has been postponed until Sunday due to an unfavorable weather forecast that includes the possibility of 3 to 5 inches of snow.

The Kirkwood Eagles are seeded No.1 in the eight-tournament tournament and are scheduled to face No.8 seed Iowa Central on Sunday at 1 p.m.

The tournament is supposed to be a double-elimination event that would last several days, but could be modified due to weather conditions.

Eagles finish ICCAC race at 28-0

BOONE - The third-ranked Kirkwood softball team finished with a perfect record in the ICCAC Tuesday by sweeping a doubleheader from No.6 DMACC, 3-1 and 8-2, in Boone.

The Eagles ended the conference season with a glittering 28-0 record. DMACC finished in second place with a 22-6 mark, losing all four of its games to the champions.

Kirkwood (48-3) has not lost since falling to Central Methodist University, 4-3, on March 18. The Eagles left the field that day with a 7-3 record and have won 41 straight since then, setting a school record for consecutive victories.

Gonzalez swings hot bat for Kirkwood

Dairo Gonzalez did not speak a word of English when he moved from Cuba to Florida with his family when he was 14 years old, but he could sure swing a baseball bat.

He speaks English very well now. And he can still swing that bat.

Gonzalez, now 19 and a sophomore a Kirkwood Community College, went on a rampage last week when he went 17 for 30 with six homers and 18 RBIs to help the Eagles (27-13) get on the winning path again.

He's been named the ICCAC Player of the Week for his exploits as he warmed up with the favorable weather.
