Kirkwood Community College - Cedar Rapids, Iowa

No. 3 Eagles rip DMACC, 100-59

The Kirkwood men's basketball team has become scary good.

The DMACC Bears found out the hard way Wednesday night after sweeping all three games from kwood last season.

The third-ranked Eagles played a magnificent ballgame from start to finish and pounded the 7th-ranked Bears, 100-59, in a conference game at Johnson Hall.

Kirkwood Coach Bryan Petersen, who is a stickler for detail, was hard-pressed to think of anything his team did wrong.

"I'm trying to think," he said, a smile crossing his face. "We'll probably have a few things when we look at the tape, but honestly it's hard to tell right now.

"It was a great team win," he said. "We obviously shared the basketball extremely well and defensively I thought we did a nice job."

DMACC swept the season series from Kirkwood last season and also beat the Eagles in the regional playoffs, denying Kirkwood a trip to the NJCAA Division II national tournament. That served as motivation leading into Wednesday's game.

"It was brought up a few times," Petersen allowed.

No. 4 KCC women roll by No. 10 DMACC

The Kirkwod women's basketball team was twice as good in the first half Wednesday night than it was in the second half, but the Eagles were still plenty good enough to handle DMACC at Johnson Hall.

The fourth-ranked Eagles poured in 48 points in the opening stanza and tailed off to 24 points in the second half, but it added up to a convincing 72-57 victory over the 10th-ranked Bears in a conference game.

Kirkwood (15-4, 2-0) opened a 25-point lead and cruised to victory.

"I thought we played really well," said Kirkwood Coach Kim Muhl. "The kids hit shots and played with a lot of energy."

Muhl was a little miffed by some of his team's quick shots in the final minutes with a big lead, but overall he was happy to get an important victory over a quality opponent.

"We outplayed them," he said. "We should have beat them by 30.

KCC women get forfeit from Iowa Lakes

Iowa Lakes Community College has forfeited its women's basketball game against Kirkwood that was scheduled for Saturday afternoon in Estherville.

Kirkwood athletic director Doug Wagemester said Iowa Lakes has only six or seven players on its roster. In addition, he said Iowa Lakes Coach Corey Christopher has resigned.

Iowa Lakes is a member of the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) with Kirkwood.

Kirkwood has already been awarded a forfeit by the conference office, giving the fourth-ranked Eagles a 14-4 overall record and 1-0 mark in the league. Iowa Lakes is now 10-6 and 0-1 in the league.

Wagemester said Iowa Lakes has been given approximately one week to decide whether it will continue with the rest of the women's basketball schedule this season.

King, Richards power No. 4 Eagles

When Da'rion King was a junior in high school, he committed to play football at Western Michigan University as a tight end with tremendous strength and great athletic ability.

His powerful body is just as impressive on a basketball floor as an immovable 6-foot-6, 240-pound center for the fourth-ranked Kirkwood Eagles.

King powered in 20 points Wednesday night, Nick Richards scored 18 and Jacob Olson added 16 as Kirkwood pounded Marshalltown, 79-56, with an impressive second half.

King, who is from Racine, Wis., said he made a hasty decision when he accepted a scholarship offer to play football at Western Michigan. That was in March of 2014 after he visited the college and was offered a spot on the team.

"I made a quick decision," he said. "I made a visit and they said everything I wanted to hear and it all sounded good. It was like a take-it or leave-it deal and I made a quick decision and didn't weigh my options.

"At the end I decided I wanted to go with my heart and go play basketball, which is my first love."

Once King gets the ball near the basket, nobody is going to take it away and few opponents are strong enough to stop his powerful moves to the bucket. He made 8 of 14 shots and also had a terrific assist when he whipped the ball to Josh Bartlett in the corner for an open 3-pointer.

King gives the Eagles (13-2) a rare force in junior college basketball with his strength and soft touch.
