Kirkwood splits twinbill with NIACC

MASON CITY - Kirkwood Coach Todd Rima sent his new team against his old team Saturday and came away with a split in Mason City.

Kirkwood bopped NIACC, 14-4, in the first game in six innings as Dairo Gonzalez went 4-for-4, scored four runs and drove in three runs.

NIACC took the nightcap, 8-2.

Logemann tosses no-hitter with 14 K's

Kirkwood freshman Amber Logemann pitched a no-hitter with 14 strikeouts Friday as the Eagles blanked NIACC, 9-0, in the first game of a conference doubleheader at Kirkwood.

Sam Belz tossed a seven-hit shutout in the second game as the Eagles completed a sweep of the makeup doubleheader with a 6-0 triumph.

The seventh-ranked Eagles raised their records to 24-3 overall and 10-0 in the ICCAC.

Final 4 has strong Kirkwood flavor

Kirkwood Community College has a catchy advertising slogan that says you can "Start Here, Go Anywhere."

That includes the Final 4 of the NCAA men's basketball tournament.

Chris Jans and Greg Heiar, two assistant coaches at Wichita State, have a strong connection to the Kirkwood Eagles.

Logemann whiffs 20 in 7 innings

Marshalltown third baseman Erica White had some advice for her teammates Wednesday afternoon after she struck out against Kirkwood ace Amber Logemann.

"Don't go after the high one," White told her friends after futilely swinging at strike three.

She also could have told her teammates to lay off the other pitches as well - high, low and in-between. It really didn't matter.

Logemann pitched a total of seven innings in Wednesday's doubleheader and struck out 20 batters in two games as the seventh-ranked Eagles swept Marshalltown, 10-0 and 5-0, in junior college softball.

Tatge socks 3 homers to lead nation

OSKALOOSA - Kayla Tatge belted three more home runs for the Kirkwood softball team Tuesday as the ninth-ranked Eagles swept a doubleheader from William Penn, 6-0 and 9-0, in Oskaloosa.

Tatge has hit 16 homers this season to lead all NJCAA Division II players in the nation, according to the NJCAA website.

Tatge socked all three of her round-trippers and drove in five runs in the second game. She has 36 RBIs in 23 games this season.
