Cedar Rapids Kernels Baseball

Kernels postponed Sunday; set twinbill Monday

The Cedar Rapids Kernels and Burlington Bees were postponed by rain and wet grounds Sunday.

The teams are scheduled to play a Midwest League doubleheader on Monday at 2 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Left-hander Brett Lee (3-2, 3.44 ERA) and right-hander Hudson Boyd (1-2, 5.95) are scheduled to pitch for Cedar Rapids in the twinbill.

The Kernels have drawn 38,008 fans in 20 home dates this year and are averaging 1,900 fans per date.

Struggling Kernels drop 4th in row

Jake Mauer is not the type of manager who likes to yell and scream at his players, but he might have a few stern words for the Kernels when they report for duty Sunday morning.

Cedar Rapids committed three errors Saturday night and lost its fourth straight game, 6-3, before 2,581 fans on a chilly Fireworks Night at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The Kernels compiled an 18-5 record in April, but the club is only 12-12 in May and not playing well lately.

Eilers awarded Adenhart scholarship

The Cedar Rapids Kernels and Kernels Foundation will present Thomas Eilers as the winner of the 2013 Nick Adenhart Memorial Scholarship before the Kernels game with Peoria on Sunday, June 16th.

Eilers is a 2013 graduate of Cedar Rapids Prairie where his school activities, academic accomplishments and basketball accomplishments were quite impressive, making him an excellent choice for the scholarship. Thomas plans on attending the University of Iowa to major in mathematics and education.

Nick Adenhart was a bright young pitcher who played for the Cedar Rapids Kernels in 2006, and was a rising star in the Los Angeles Angels organization. Only hours after Nick’s 2009 season debut on the mound for the Angels, a drunk driver tragically killed him at age 22.

Nick’s family continues to honor him with the awarding of a $1,000 scholarship in his memory. The Kernels Foundation is privileged to administer the scholarship on behalf of Nick’s family.

Kernels drop 2nd straight to Beloit

BELOIT, Wis. – The Beloit Snappers topped the Cedar Rapids Kernels, 5-3, Thursday in Midwest League baseball at Pohlman Field.

The Kernels stranded 10 runners on base. They scored all three of their runs in the second inning.

It looked like the game would turn into a slugfest as Snappers led 4-3 after two innings, but Beloit’s single tally in the fifth inning was the only other run scored the rest of the game.

The Kernels left the bases loaded twice in the game. In the first inning they stranded three after two walks and a hit batter. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases with no outs in the third inning, but two fly outs and a strikeout ended the inning.

Harrison enjoys hot start with Kernels

One of the top-ranked high school power hitters at the time, Travis Harrison was drafted by the Minnesota Twins with a supplemental first round pick (the 50th overall) in 2011.

He signed a $1.05 million bonus to join the Twins organization and bypassed a scholarship offer to play baseball for USC.

There's never been much doubt about Harrison's ability to hit a baseball. The question in many minds is what his ultimate defensive position will be. Right now, the Twins are working with Harrison to develop his skills at third base for the Cedar Rapids Kernels.

Goodrum on the right side in Kernels win

Niko Goodrum is one of five switch hitters on the Cedar Rapids Kernels' roster.

The stats say he is most comfortable swinging from the left side. He entered Monday afternoon's game with a .276 batting average and 15 RBI swinging lefty.

From the right side? A paltry .240 with two RBI.

But Goodrum stepped into the right-handed batter's box against Kane County southpaw Nathan Dorris with the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth inning and the Kernels trailing by two runs. He lined an opposite-field, bases-clearing triple into the right-field corner that put the Kernels ahead. They went on to beat the Cougars, 8-7, before a crowd of 3,017 at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
