Coe sending 3 wrestlers to NCAA meet

DUBUQUE - Three Coe College wrestlers earned spots Sunday in the NCAA Division III national tournament by virtue of their finishes at the NCAA Central Regional Championships.

Defending national champion Farai Sewera had a big day for the Kohawks at 165 pounds, capping his day with a 6-4 overtime decision over second-seeded Nicholas Michael of Wartburg, 6-4. Sewera (25-2) was named the meet's Most Outstanding Wrestler.

Returning All-American Ryan Harrington (25-3) earned a return trip to nationals at 174 after losing a 3-1 decision to top-ranked Eric DeVos of Wartburg in the finals on a takedown in the final seconds.

At 125, Jan Rosenberg (21-10) also earned a return trip to nationals by winning the third-place match with a 12-8 win over Jimmy Panozza of Augustana. Rosenberg will take a 21-10 record into the NCAA National Championships.

The Kohawks finished fourth in the 13 team field with 86 points. Wartburg won the team title with 160 points.

The national meet will be held March 11-12 at the U.S. Cellular Center.

Coe men sweep Carthage, Quincy

The Coe men's tennis team raised its record to 8-1 Sunday with a pair of wins at the Clark Racquet Center.

The Kohawks opened the day with an 8-1 win over Carthage and followed it up with another 8-1 triumph over Quincy.

Linn-Mar graduate Brady Anderson was impressive in sweeping both of his matches at No. 1 singles.

Coe women split 2 tennis matches

The Coe women's tennis team split a pair of matches at the Clark Racquet Center Saturday.

The Kohawks topped Webster, 7-2, and lost to Quincy, 6-3.

Laura Birky, Sarah Lasecki, Tamara Washington and Kaitlin Fosler won their singles matches against Webster. Lasecki and Fosler won their contests against Quincy.

The split left Coe with an 8-3 record.

Hawkins shines at IIAC track meet

STORM LAKE - Chris Hawkins of Coe captured the long jump and triple jump at the Iowa Conference indoor track meet Saturday in Storm Lake.

Hawkins sailed 23 feet, 1 3/4 inches in the long jump and went 46-1 1/4 in the triple jump.

The Kohawks captured the 4x800 relay with Ben Nelson, Dray Schreider, Ryan Izer and Beau Freeborn clocked in 7 minutes, 56.4 seconds.

Robbie Peters finished third in the shot put (48-0 3/4) and third in the weight throw (54-3 3/4).

Central won the men's title with 148 points. Coe placed sixth with 65 points.

Wartburg captured the women's title. Coe did not have any top-3 finishers and finished last in eighth place with 26 points.

Coe softball team splits in Minnesota

ROCHESTER, Minn. - The Coe softball team lost to Saint Scholastica, 5-4, in the season opener at the RCTC Dome in Rochester (Minn.) on Saturday.

Linn-Mar grad Maddy Ryan drove in two runs for the Kohawks. Paige Wieland scored twice. The Kohawks took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the third, but Saint Scholastica scored twice in the top of the fifth and held on for the victory.

Coe defeated Saint Benedict, 6-2, in its second game late Saturday night. Wieland went 3-for-5 with two RBIs to lead a 16-hit attack.

Sara Czachowski also had three hits for the Kohawks. Maliah Fligg, Bella Berthel, Madi Miller and Mallory McArtor had two hits.
