Slaymaker named Mustang men's golf coach

Mount Mercy Director of Athletics Paul Gavin has named his successor as head men's golf coach. Luke Slaymaker will take over the program beginning Jan. 15, Gavin announced Monday.

"Luke's passion for the game of golf and love for Mount Mercy are a great recipe for success," said Gavin. "I have total confidence he will continue with the strong tradition he helped build as a player years ago."

Slaymaker, a native of Center Point, played golf for Gavin and the Mustangs from 2000-04. He held the school record for career scoring average (75.22) from 2004-12 and was inducted into the Mount Mercy Athletic Hall of Fame in 2011.

Slaymaker was a two-time NAIA all-American (2003, 2004) and NAIA all-region performer. He also garnered all-conference honors three times (2001, 2002, 2004) and was a three-time academic all-conference selection.

Since graduating from Mount Mercy in 2004, Slaymaker has played in more than 80 professional events and also caddied professionally for the LPGA's developmental tour, the Symetra Tour, while traveling to Canada, Mexico, Spain, Australia and New Zealand.

"I'm excited to start a new chapter of my life," Slaymaker said. "I welcome the opportunity to coach the next generation of golfers, and what better place to do that than my alma mater."

Mount Mercy men upset No.9 Ozarks

POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. - CJ Parker and Mychael Brawner scored 15 points apiece Saturday as the Mount Mercy Mustangs upset ninth-ranked College of the Ozarks, 88-79, in an NAIA Division II men's basketball game at Keeter Gymnasium.

Alex Houston and Ben Struss scored 13 points apiece for the Mustangs and Derik Gogg had 10 points in a balanced attack.

Mount Mercy (12-5) was hot from the field, hitting 39 of 71 shots for 54.9 percent. Gogg and Struss grabbed seven rebounds. Tre Wagner had six assists.

Cameron Paschke poured in 27 points for College of the Ozarks (13-4).

Dolan, Herb pace Mount Mercy women

Ashley Dolan scored 28 points and Abby Herb had 24 to lead the Mount Mercy women’s basketball team to an 83-64 win over Presentation of South Dakota on Friday at the Hennessey Recreation Center.

The Mustangs led 22-17 after the first quarter and pulled away with a 29-12 edge in the second quarter.

Makenzie Zeitler had eight rebounds for Mount Mercy (7-11) and Herb added seven rebounds.

Haley Froelich had 25 points for Presentation (5-7).

Mustang women fall to No. 9 Stritch

The ninth-ranked Cardinal Stritch women’s basketball team ran away with a 78-62 win over Mount Mercy on Tuesday at the Hennessey Recreation Center.

Cardinal Stritch (13-3) pulled away with a 24-15 run in the second quarter to take control and built a 63-42 entering the fourth quarter.

Ashley Dolan scored 18 points for Mount Mercy (6-11). Abby Herb had 17 points and Makenzie Zeitler grabbed seven rebounds.

Emily Neitzel scored 18 points to lead Cardinal Stritch.
