Mount Mercy women top Graceland

The Mount Mercy women's basketball team gave Coach Micha Mims a  going-away present Wednesday night.

The Mustangs defeated Graceland, 86-71, in a Heart of America  Conference game at the Hennessey Recreation Center.

The victory came 10 hours after the school announced that Mims will be  not returning as the head coach next season after four years on the job.

Mount Mercy raised its records to 5-17 overall and 2-15 in the  conference, with both league victories coming against Graceland. The  Yellowjackets fell to 3-21 overall and 0-18 in the league.

Sandra Mia led the Mustangs with 18 points. Brianna Thomas scored 17  points, Chailey Cabalis 13 and Sarah Moffett 10. Cabalis had eight  rebounds.

Mims stepping aside at Mount Mercy

Mount Mercy women's basketball Coach Micha Mims will be stepping aside at the conclusion of the 2019-20 season to pursue other professional opportunities, Athletic Director Paul Gavin announced Wednesday.

The search for a new head coach will begin immediately.

The Mustangs compiled a 25-67 record during her first three seasons and are 4-17 overall and 1-15 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference this year, making her 29-84 overall.

Mims returned to her alma mater to lead the women's basketball program in March 2016 after serving as an assistant coach at Culver-Stockton for two years.

Mount Mercy spikes Culver-Stockton

Evan Gaskill collected 14 kills Tuesday as the Mount Mercy men's  volleyball team swept Culver-Stockton, 25-21, 25-16, 25-23, in a Heart  of America Conference match at the Hennessey Recreation Center.

The Mustangs squared their records at 2-2 overall and 2-2 in the  league. Culver-Stockton fell to 0-8 overall and 0-2 in the league.

Julian Armendano contributed 12 kills for Mount Mercy and Ben Steffen  had 10.

McKinney powers Mustangs to 107-98 victory

Dennis McKinney poured in 35 points and snared 10 rebounds Saturday afternoon to help Mount Mercy top Missouri Valley, 107-98, in a Heart of America Conference shootout at the Hennessey Recreation Center.

The victory lifted the Mustangs to 11-11 overall and 6-10 in the conference. Missouri Valley fell to 12-10 overall and 9-8 in the league.

McKinney shot 12 for 18 from the floor, including 4 for 6 on 3-pointers, and sank all seven of his free throws. He also had three assists.

Bailey Basala pitched in with 25 points for Mount Mercy, including a 12-for-15 showing at the foul line and three 3-pointers. Streeter McIlravy scored 18 points with four 3-pointers. Tyler Kelley added 13 points.

Mount Mercy spikers fall short

Missouri Valley rallied to trim Mount Mercy, 3-2, in a men's volleyball match at the Hennessey Recreation Center Saturday night.

Mount Mercy bolted to a 2-0 lead with victories in the first two sets, but Missouri Valley won the next three sets to prevail 19-25, 25-27, 25-20, 25-21, 15-9.

Julian Armendano led the Mustangs with 15 kills and 12 digs. Ben Steffen had 13 kills and Evan Gaskill 12.

Ben Ruggles rolled up 41 assists and had 15 digs for Mount Mercy (1-2, 1-2). Matt Belling had 14 digs and Gaskill 13. Steffen blocked six shots.
