Monson wins title at Rock Island

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Mount Mercy's Meg Monson shot a two-round total of 152 to take medalist honors at the Highland Classic on Sunday at the Highland Springs Golf Course.

Monson shot a 77 on Saturday and came back with a 75 on Sunday to rally for a one-shot win over Carl Sandburg's Justine Peel, who opened with a 74, but had a 79 on Sunday.

DMACC won the team title with a 664 total. Clarke (677) was second and Mount Mercy (689) took third.

Mount Mercy edges Waldorf, 2-1

DUBUQUE - Mount Mercy scored twice in the first 16 minutes and made it stand up for a 2-1 men's soccer victory here Sunday.

Yinka Ajibola and Jamesser Minthor had the goals for the Mustangs (4-2). Mohamed Hamed and Marco Fichtner has the assists for Mount Mercy.

Tomas Zajfert made four saves in goal to get the win for the Mustangs.

Kwaku Amoah scored in the 77th minute for Waldorf (2-3).

 

Monson leads Mount Mercy golfers

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Meg Monson of Mount Mercy fired a 5-over-par 77 in the first round of the Augustana Highland Classic and is in second place heading into the final round Sunday.

Justine Peel of Carl Sandburg Community College holds the lead at 2-over 74.

Clarke University leads the team standings. Mount Mercy sits in fifth place out of eight schools.

Mustang men boot Dakota Wesleyan

DUBUQUE - Kevon Farquharson and Filip Kovacevic scored goals late in the second half Saturday as the Mount Mercy men's soccer team blanked Dakota Wesleyan, 2-0, in a match in Dubuque.

Farquharson notched an unassisted goal in the 79th minute to break a scoreless tie. Kovacevic tallied in the 83rd minute with an assist from Marco Fichtner for an insurance goal.

The Mustangs out-shot Dakota Wesleyan, 26-3.

Mount Mercy raised its record to 3-2.

 

Mount Mercy women tie Calumet

HAMMOND, Ind. - The Mount Mercy women's soccer team battled Purdue-Calumet for nearly two hours in the heat Saturday and finished with a 1-1 tie in double overtime.

Julia Roedel gave the Mustangs a 1-0 lead with an unassisted goal in the 23th minute of the match, but Purdue-Calumet tied the contest with an "own goal" early in the second half when a Mount Mercy player inadvertently put the ball in her own net.

It stayed 1-1 for all 90 minutes of regulation and neither team scored in the 10-minute overtime sessions.

Hannah Schroeder made 14 saves for Mount Mercy. The Mustangs have a 3-2-1 record so far this season.
