Mount Mercy softball stung by Bees

DAVENPORT - St. Ambrose scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning Wednesday to trim Mount Mercy, 4-3, in a Midwest Collegiate Conference softball game in Davenport.

The second game of the doubleheader was suspended due to darkness with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning with St. Ambrose clinging to an 8-7 lead.

Ellie Rizer went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs for Mount Mercy in the first game. Brianna Sturtz also went 2-for-3.

The loss dropped the Mustangs to 10-16 overall and 0-7 in the league. St. Ambrose is 11-10 overall and 6-4.

Mount Mercy baseball falls at Clarke

PEOSTA - The Mount Mercy baseball team dipped below the .500 mark Tuesday with a 12-4 loss to Clarke University in a Midwest Collegiate Conference game at Spiegel Park in Peosta.

The second game of the doubleheader was called off in the first inning due to inclement weather.

Mount Mercy fell to 13-14 overall and 4-5 in the league. Clarke raised its records to 15-16 and 6-5.

Austin Czerwiez went 3-for-4 for the Mustangs. JanKarlos Badillo had two hits. Clarke hit three home runs.

Mount Mercy softball drops pair

The Mount Mercy softball team lost a pair of two-run games to Clarke on Tuesday, 7-5 and 12-10, in a Midwest Collegiate Conference doubleheader at Tomahawk Park in Cedar Rapids.

L.J. Putzier, Amanda Gaffey and Carson Burgart had two hits for Mount Mercy in the first game. Gaffey drove in two runs.

Alexis Ferguson and Putzier belted home runs for the Mustangs in the second game. Burgart went 3-for-4. Ferguson, Putzier, Gaffey and Brianna Sturtz had two hits. Ferguson had three RBIs and Sturtz drove in two runs.

Schlueter takes 12th for Mustang golfers

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. - Matt Schlueter finished 12th for Mount Mercy at the NAIA Golfweek Spring Invitational at the Mission Inn Golf & Tennis Resort in Florida Monday.

Schlueter carded rounds of 74-76-71 for a 54-hole score of 5-over-par 221. Alan Cooke of South Carolina Beaufort was the medalist at 3-under 213.

Jack South finished 18th for Mount Mercy at 7-over 223.

The Mustangs placed 10th out of 12 teams in the final standings. Coastal Georgia won the title.

South named MCC Golfer of Week

Mount Mercy senior Jack South has been honored by the Midwest Collegiate Conference as the Golfer of the Week for the third time this season.

South, from Birmingham, England, claimed medalist honors at the Spring Invitational at Hunters Ridge Golf Course last week. He posted a 5-under-par 139 with rounds of 70 and 69 in a field of 59 golfers.
