Herb nets 30 as Mustangs belt GV

Abbie Herb poured in 30 points in 24 minutes Saturday as Mount Mercy belted Grand View, 76-56, in the final game of the regular season at the Hennessey Recreation Center.

The Mustangs denied Grand View from claiming the outright regular-season title in the Midwest Collegiate Conference. Grand View tied for first place with St. Ambrose with 9-3 records, while Mount Mercy tied Clarke for third place at 8-4.

Hayden, Henke toss sweep for Mustangs

OKLAHOMA CITY - Alex Hayden and Cale Henke tossed complete games Friday as Mount Mercy collected a pair of low-scoring victories in Oklahoma City.

Hayden pitched a four-hitter in the opener as the Mustangs trimmed 16th-ranked Oklahoma City, 3-1.

Henke allowed only two hits as the Mustangs nipped MidAmerica Nazarene, 2-1, in their second game.

Hayden is a Cedar Rapids Kennedy grad and Henke played at Kirkwood Community College.

Hayden struck out six batters and walked only one in the seven-inning opener. The Mustangs scored all three of their runs in the third inning with four walks and a two-run single by Patrick Haney.

Mustangs clinch first title since 1996

DAVENPORT - Not bad for a team picked to finish last.

Dondre Osborne scored 20 points and Kyle Lamaak made 9-of-10 from the floor to finish with 19 points as Mount Mercy once again took control down the stretch, downing St. Ambrose, 88-79, at Lee Loman Arena.

The victory assured the Mustangs (23-4, 10-1) of their first Midwest Collegiate Conference title since 1996. Mount Mercy was picked to finish at the bottom of the standings before the season.

Time and time again, the Mustangs have found ways to win. The Bees took a 48-42 lead with about 12 minutes remaining only to see Mount Mercy go on a 12-0 run, capped by a conventional 3-point play from Laamak.

The Mustangs then hit enough free throws in the final minutes to secure the victory.
