Mustangs get win at Loras

DUBUQUE - James Boonstoppel came off the bench to score 23 points, hitting 5-of-8 from 3-poing range, to lead Mount Mercy to an 85-76 win over Loras on Friday night.

Boonstoppel was one of five players in double figures for the Mustangs (5-2). Dondre Osborne added 16 points, Ben Struss 12, Alex Houston 10 and Ian Matos 10.

Struss also had nine rebounds.

Justin VanWambeke led the Duhawks (2-1) with 21 points.

Mount Mercy rolls past Rockford

MOUNT VERNON - Danielle Herdliska scored 22 points and Paige Last added 15 as Mount Mercy rolled to a 93-56 win over Rockford on Sunday in the Cornell Classic at Cornell College.

Alisa Weiland had 11 and Makenzie Zeitler 10 for the Mustangs (4-2). Mount Mercy was 13 of 25 from 3-point range in the game. Zeitler led the Mustangs with 11 rebounds.

Callie Rezin led Rockford (0-2) with 17 points.

Herb stars for Mustangs in loss

MOUNT VERNON - Abby Herb scored 31 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and had six steals Saturday for Mount Mercy in an 84-69 loss to Illinois Wesleyan at a tournament in Mount Vernon.

Herb shot 14 for 22 from the floor in her big outing. Christa Oldham scored 14 points for the Mustangs (3-2).

Samantha Ellsworth hit five 3-pointers and led Illinois Wesleyan with 19 points. Illinois Wesleyan shot 10 of 24 on 3-pointers, compared to just 1 for 11 for Mount Mercy.

Mount Mercy plays Rockford Sunday afternoon at the Cornell College tournament.

Mustangs nip No. 24 Culver-Stockton

Ian Matos made two free throws with 16 seconds left Saturday afternoon to give Mount Mercy a wild 96-95 victory over 24th-ranked Culver-Stockton in an NAIA men's basketball game at the Hennessey Recreation Center.

Culver-Stockton took a 95-94 lead with 28 seconds remaining on a jump shot by Jojuan Graham. Matos was fouled 12 seconds later and produced in the clutch for the Mustangs (4-2).

Culver-Stockton (3-1) missed a shot with five seconds left. Dondre Osborne of Mount Mercy was fouled with two seconds to go. He missed both free throws, but Culver-Stockton did not have enough time for another shot.

Matos made four 3-pointers and led Mount Mercy 19 points. James Boonstoppel scored 18 points for the Mustangs, Alex Houston 13, Ben Struss 12 and Da'Quan Moore 10.

Hoffmann of Mount Mercy honored by MCC

Leslie Hoffmann of Mount Mercy University has been named to the Midwest Collegiate Conference all-star volleyball squad.

Megan Paustian and Abbie Perez of Mount Mercy received honorable mention.

Fourteen players were named all-conference and 14 more received honorable mention.
