No.20 Ashford trims Mustangs

CLINTON - Joe Danforth poured in 24 points Tuesday night as 20th-ranked Ashford edged Mount Mercy, 60-57, in an NAIA men's basketball game at Kehl Arena in Clinton.

Da'Quan Moore hit three 3-pointers and led the Mustangs (2-1) with 16 points. Ben Struss grabbed 10 rebounds for Mount Mercy and Dondre Osborne had six assists.

The Mustangs hit ten 3-pointers, but they made only eleven 2-point baskets in the ballgame.

Mount Mercy men win wild shootout

OSKALOOSA - The Mount Mercy Mustangs defeated William Penn, 2-1, in a marathon shootout in the quarterfinals of the Midwest Collegiate Conference men's soccer tournament Sunday.

The Mustangs won the shootout, 12-11, and will face St. Ambrose in the conference semifinals next Sunday.

Marco Fichtner gave Mount Mercy a 1-0 lead in the 39th minute with an unassisted goal. William Penn tied the match, 1-1, on a goal by Ralph Duopu-Turner in the 88th minute.

The shootout was tied, 11-11, after 12 shooters. William Penn's 13th man went first and was unable to connect, and Mount Mercy won the match when its 13th man found the goal.

Mount Mercy raised its record to 11-6-2. William Penn finished the season at 7-7-4.

Goar Kempf-Heitlinger made 10 saves during regulation time for the Mustangs.

 

 

 

Herb nets 31 as Mustangs roll

DES MOINES - Abby Herb poured in 31 points Saturday as Mount Mercy crushed Central Christian, 118-62, at the Grand View Tournament in Des Moines.

Herb, a Cedar Rapids Washington grad, hit 13-of-21 shots from the field and was 4-for-4 at the foul line.

Maija Jantti scored 22 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the Mustangs (1-1). Makenzie Zeitler scored 12 points and snared 16 rebounds. Ashley Dolan scored 15 points for the winners.

Paige Last contributed 11 points and six assists. Christa Oldham had 10 rebounds. Alisa Weiland, a Prairie grad, had seven assists.

Osborne sparks Mustangs by Trinity

ELGIN, Ill. - Dondre Osborn poured in 25 points and collected eight assists Saturday as Mount Mercy topped Trinity, 88-81, at a tournament in Elgin, Ill.

Osborne hit three 3-pointers, grabbed four rebounds and had two steals in a strong all-around performance. He made 7-of-11 shots from the field and was 8-of-9 at the foul line.

Alex Houston scored 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the Mustangs (2-0). He made 8-of-11 shots from the field and also had two steals.

Ian Matos added 10 points and six rebounds for Mount Mercy. Eleven different players scored for the Mustangs.

Mount Mercy women stung by Bees

DAVENPORT - The Mount Mercy women's soccer team was trimmed by St. Ambrose, 2-1, in the opening round of the Midwest Collegiate Conference tournament in Davenport Saturday.

Cheylee Octavio tied the game for the Mustangs, 1-1, in the 61st minute with an assist from Danielle Herdliska.

Jordan Eisenberg scored an unassisted goal in the 66th minute to snap the tie and give St. Ambrose the victory, sending the Fighting Bees into the quarterfinals.

Mount Mercy ended its season with an 8-9-1 record.
