Lehman jumps from IWSL to Hawkeyes

When Sarah Lehman joined the Iowa Women's Softball League earlier this year, she did not know where she'd be playing college softball next season.

Now she's landed a spot as a pitcher with the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Lehman, a multi-sport athlete at Iowa City Regina, spent the 2017-18 school year as a volleyball player at Coe College, but she decided to change sports and wanted to join the Hawkeyes.

New Iowa Coach Renee Gillispie watched Lehman pitch for Ironside Apparel in the IWSL this season shortly after being named at Iowa and now Lehman will be one of her pitchers.

Lehman enjoyed another solid outing Sunday when she tossed a complete game in a 3-3 tie with Hawkeye Convenience Stores in the third and final game at Mount Mercy.

McFarlane, Robertson shine in IWSL

Haley McFarlane of St. Cloud State and Sydney Robertson of Mount Mercy enjoyed big days in the Iowa Women's Softball League on Sunday.

McFarlane went 5-for-6 with two homers and five RBIs for Ironside Apparel in their two games at Mount Mercy. Robertson also went 5-for-6 with two triples and four RBIs for Emil's Hideaway.

McFarlane and Robertson produced two of the best offensive displays in the two-year history of the league.

McFarlane went 3-for-3 with two long solo homers and three RBIs as Ironside Apparel nipped Hawkeye Convenience Stores, 7-6, in the first game at Busse Field.

Ironside Apparel scored two runs in the top of the seventh to erase a 6-5 deficit on a walk by Tawny Menster (Mount Mercy), a single by Abby Downs (UNI), a single by McFarlane, a single by Natalie Halvorson of Kirkwood and another single by Jessi Butler of Kirkwood.

Look Who's Playing in 2019 IWSL

Sixty-six players have registered for the Iowa Women's Softball League for the 2019 campaign as of May 12.

The Central Division has been canceled due to a lack of players.

There is still some time to register. Registration for the 2019 season is $100.

Craig tosses gem for Ironside Apparel

Brooke Craig of UNI pitched a terrific game for Ironside Apparel in  the Iowa Women's Softball League on Sunday.

Craig tossed a five-hit shutout as Ironside Apparel blanked Emil's  Hideaway, 4-0, in the first game at Mount Mercy.

Adara Opiola, one of Craig's teammates at UNI, went 3-for-4 for  Ironside Apparel in the victory. Tawny Menster of Mount Mercy was  2-for-3 with two doubles and scored two runs. Morgan Goedken of  Wartburg was also 2-for-3.

Erin Kuba of Utah State had two hits for Emil's Hideaway.

Ira shines for Hawkeye Convenience Stores

Emily Ira enjoyed a big day for Hawkeye Convenience Stores in the Iowa Women's Softball League on Sunday.

Ira, a left-handed pitcher from Western Illinois, pitched a two-hit shutout with 12 strikeouts as Hawkeye Convenience Stores blanked Emil's Hideaway, 10-0, at Busse Field in Game 1. She also went 3-for-3 as a hitter with two runs scored and an RBI.

Kylee Biedermann of Clarke had two hits for the winners and Erin Drahozal of Upper Iowa collected two RBIs. Payton Bruner of Mount Mercy, Brittni LaFountaine of Illinois State, Emma Hartman of Cornell and Jenna Schwartzhoff of Clarke also had RBIs for Hawkeye Convenience Stores.

Hailey Duwa of Western Illinois hit a double for Emil's Hideaway.
