Prairie's Harper goes crazy against Kennedy

Crazy, crazy, crazy.

How else to describe a football game that featured 74 points, 794 total yards, 40 first downs and a stunning 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown?

One word. Crazy.

Prairie senior DeMetrius Harper caught 13 passes for 134 yards and two touchdowns, and added the kickoff return for a score that led the Hawks past Kennedy, 41-33, Friday night in a Mississippi Valley Conference non-divisional game at Kingston Stadium.

Warriors start season with special win

With 10 graduated seniors playing college football, experts perhaps could have been forgiven for hedging their expectations for the Washington football team.

"There weren't very high expectations for us," Washington senior tailback Mitch Bredeson said Friday night, after the Warriors disposed of cross-town rival Kennedy, 17-6, in a season-opener at Kingston Stadium. "We proved we still could play in the MVC and be a top 10 team in the MVC. That's pretty special to us, yeah."

How special?

"This is a special win and I'm going to give you eight hours to celebrate," Warriors Coach Tony Lombardi told his squad after the game.

Torn labrum ends Jacobus' football season

Kennedy junior Derek Jacobus suffered a torn labrum in practice Thursday and will miss the entire 2012 football season, Coach Tim Lewis said Saturday.

Jacobus, who is right-handed, tore the labrum in his left shoulder while working as a receiver. "He just went up for a pass and landed on his shoulder," Lewis said.

Jacobus had been working as a receiver and quarterback in camp. He was competing with Riley Fergus and Joel Smetzer at quarterback.

Cougars looking for faster start this year

"No More Slow Starts" is not a real sexy slogan for a high school football team, but it might be appropriate at Kennedy.

The Cougars lost their first two games of the season in 2011 and dropped their first three contests in 2010, so needless to say they'd like to avoid something like that this year.

Kennedy rallied to make the Class 4A playoffs both times, but it was an uphill climb.

Josh Jahlas joining ISU football as walk-on

Cedar Rapids Kennedy senior Josh Jahlas wants to see if he's good enough to play football in the Big 12 Conference after earning all-state honors this past season.

That's why he turned down chances to pursue a scholarship with NCAA Division II schools in order to join the Iowa State Cyclones as a walk-on this fall.

"I feel like if I just get in the program and work hard I'll eventually start to play," he said Thursday night. "I might not play for a couple of years, but I'll eventually play.
