No.3 Warriors punish Cougars, 41-7

To say the Washington football team has a variety of weapons would be an understatement.

Coach Paul James has depth in the backfield, depth at receiver, depth at quarterback and a deep, talented offensive line with a pair of Division I-caliber starters in Iowa State commit Julian Good-Jones and Royal Silver.

And that is just the offense.

The Warrior defense was almost as good in Thursday night’s showdown with Cedar Rapids Kennedy at steamy Kingston Stadium.

Washington got touchdowns from six different players on offense while the defense held the Cougars in check in a 41-7 victory.

Cougars tripped by No.5 Trojans, 12-9

IOWA CITY - Cedar Rapids Kennedy football fans had to like their chances when Iowa City West faced a 4th-and-15 predicament late in the game and the Cougars clinging to a slim 9-6 lead.

One more stop. One more tackle. One more play and Kennedy would have come from Iowa City with a satisfying victory.

It didn't happen.

Iowa City West quarterback Aaron Bleil avoided the blitz and hit Gabe Huinker for a 33-yard touchdown pass on that 4th-and-15 play with 1:59 left to give the Trojans a 12-9 victory in a non-district ballgame.

"The thing about football, sometimes it comes down to one play," said new Kennedy Coach Brian White. "If the kid drops the ball, we're celebrating. If we get the sack, we're celebrating. We didn't."

White installs new offense at Kennedy

Brian White had some big news to share with Sammy Lizarraga last February.

First of all, White was going to become the new head football coach at Kennedy High School. And second of all, the Cougars were going to throw the ball a lot more this season.

Make that A LOT more.

Lizarraga, a promising quarterback with a strong arm, was all ears.

"When I got the job, he was one of the first kids I went up to and started talking to," White said this week. "I said, 'Hey, things are going to change a little bit for you, Sammy,' and his eyes lit up."

Brian White is new Kennedy football coach

Kennedy Athletics Director Aaron Stecker didn't have far to look to find a new football coach after Tim Lewis resigned in December.

He was right there in the building.

Stecker announced Tuesday that Brian White has been named Kennedy's head football coach.

White has been a Cougar assistant football coach since 2006, serving as defensive coordinator as well as coaching linebackers, running backs and tight ends. He was named the Iowa Football Coaches Association Class 4A assistant football coach of the year in 2010.
