Heitland will play football at Coe

Cedar Rapids Kennedy senior Drew Heitland plans to play football at Coe College next season.

Heitland, a 6-foot-3 tight end and defensive end, helped the Cougars finish 8-4 last season and reach the third round of the Class 4A playoffs.

He led Kennedy in receptions with 20 for 292 yards and three touchdowns. He also had 43 tackles with two sacks.

Heitland was named first team all-Metro and first team all-Mississippi Valley Conference. His brother, Trevor, was a sophomore on the Coe football team in 2013.

Sievertsen named 1st team All-American

PHILADELPHIA – University of Northern Iowa placekicker Tyler Sievertsen has been named to The Sports Network FCS All-America First Team, it was announced Wednesday.

It is the sixth All-America honor in his career.

Sievertsen, a senior from Cedar Rapids Kennedy, finished the 2013 season 21 of 27 on field goals and a perfect 34 of 34 on PATs. He set a school record for consecutive PATs made at 114 of 114 in his career as a Panther.

Sievertsen made a career-long 50-yard field goal against North Dakota State and had a career-high four field goals in a game twice during the season.

Lewis resigns as Kennedy football coach

Tim Lewis, the winningest football coach in school history, has resigned at Kennedy High School after compiling a 78-65 record in 14 years.

Lewis will stay at Kennedy as a physical education teacher and head coach of the Kennedy strength and conditioning program, which he described as his true love and passion.

The Cougars finished 8-4 this season and reached the quarterfinals of the Class 4A playoffs.

Lewis began thinking about stepping aside as the football coach before the season began and informed Kennedy athletic director of his final decision Wednesday.

Hall selected to all-state team

Matt Nelson and Daniel Vega of Xavier High School have been named to the Des Moines Register Elite All-State Football Team on the defensive line.

Nelson and Vega also were named first team all-state in Class 4A on the Register's 100th all-state squads. Xavier kicker Ryan Persick was named second team all-state in Class 4A as a punter.

The Saints finished 12-2 this season and reached the championship game of the Class 4A playoffs. Nelson, Vega and Persick are seniors.

Kennedy junior Terrance Hall was named second team all-state in Class 4A at linebacker.

Prairie junior Bryce Meeker was named second team all-state in Class 4A on the offensive line.

Saints pinch Cougars for trip to UNI-Dome

There were no fancy speeches in the Xavier locker room at halftime Friday, no fire-and-brimstone demonstrations and certainly no finger-pointing.

"All we said was, 'Do your job,'" Coach Duane Schulte maintained after the game had a happy ending for his club.

The Saints absorbed Kennedy's best shot in the first half and came out swinging in the third quarter in the quarterfinals of the Class 4A playoffs Friday before a standing-room-only crowd on a crisp, breezy night at Saints Field.

Xavier exploded for 21 points in the third period and blanked the Cougars, 21-0, to earn a trip to the Class 4A semifinals next week.
