Moa runs wild as Cougars whip City High

It was a Friday evening of jubilation all around on Senior Night for the Kennedy Cougars at Kingston Stadium.

Senior scatback Miles Moa celebrated his 18th birthday by lugging the ball 34 times for an even 300 yards as the Cougars whipped fifth-ranked Iowa City High, 35-14.

Kennedy (6-3) will host Prairie (5-4) in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs Wednesday at 8 p.m. at Kingston Stadium.

Not surprisingly, Moa left the game with leg cramps with eight minutes left to go, but by then had pushed his season rushing mark to 1,125 yards.

Refs made right call against Cougars

Upon further review, Kennedy football coach Tim Lewis acknowledged the officials made the correct call against the Cougars in their 30-27 loss to Dubuque Hempstead Friday night at Dalzell Field in Dubuque.

Kennedy quarterback Derek Jacobus was flagged for a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty when he leaped over a Hempstead defender on a running play in open field. Lewis questioned the call Friday, saying he'd never seen a penalty like that in 22 years as a high school coach.

He checked the rulebook and discovered the officials were right. It's a safety rule, meant to protect the player who is being vaulted.

Kennedy hurt by strange call in Dubuque

DUBUQUE – Referees deemed Derek Jacobus' razzle dazzle Made-For-SportsCenter's Top 10 performance too much, and a gritty Dubuque Hempstead defense resolved the showstopping Cedar Rapids Kennedy quarterback wouldn't be the death of their playoff dream Friday night.

On Jacobus' only real mistake of an otherwise brilliant night, Blake Thurston stepped in front of big Cougars tight end Killian Magee in the right corner of the end zone to intercept Jacobus with 40 seconds left and seal the Mustangs' crazy 30-27 homecoming victory over Kennedy at Dalzell Field.

“I saw the ball in the air and said, 'That's mine,'” Thurston remarked. “I've got to get it for the team.”

Cougars roll by Waterloo East, 42-6

Cedar Rapids Kennedy had two defensive touchdowns before the popcorn was salted Thursday and ended up with a 42-6 victory over winless Waterloo East at Kingston Stadium.

Kennedy (5-2, 3-1) locked in its spot in the Class 4A playoffs with two weeks still left in the regular season.

"Now it's all about seeding," Kennedy Coach Tim Lewis said. "The chance to play at home. Get the seniors to play at Kingston again. There's still a lot riding on these games."

It is a different feeling than a year ago when the Cougars started 0-5 before winning four straight to make the playoffs.

"It's a relief," senior Jacob Shannon said. "But I know we've got to work for it and practice harder now. We want to go as far as we can."

Moa helps Cougars roll by J-Hawks

Although he's been Kennedy's leading rusher, senior scatback Miles Moa says he's been unhappy with his season so far.

“I had a rough start,” he said Friday night after leading the Cougars to a 35-14 win over Jefferson at Kingston Stadium.

“I wasn't reading the blocks right and kept missing my assignments. Just wasn't producing like I wanted to.”

That all changed in a flash when, on Kennedy's first play from scrimmage, he scooted 29 yards for a score.
