Schulz hat trick sends Cougars past North Scott

ELDRIDGE -- Freshman Mark Schulz's hat trick propelled Kennedy past North Scott, 4-0, Saturday afternoon in boys soccer.

Kennedy jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute on a goal by junior Eric Bertroche.

Schulz scored the next three goals, all in the first half. He scored in the 24th minute off an assists from Bertroche. He added goals in the 33rd and 34th minute as Kennedy took command of the match.

The game was Kennedy's third in as many days, but was the 14th-ranked Cougars' first over that span. Kennedy is 8-7.

Controversial call keys Xavier past Kennedy

Isaac Frisch's goal in the seventh minute of overtime lifted Xavier past Kennedy, 2-1, Friday afternoon in a Mississippi Valley Conference boys soccer game at Kennedy.

The game was the resumption of a contest from May 3 that was suspended by lightning in the ninth minute of the first half. Kennedy held a 1-0 lead on a goal by Grant Sheeley at the time of the suspension.

A controversial foul with seven minutes left in regulation gave Xavier a penalty kick that Logan Buschette converted to tie the game, 1-1.

Xavier sprung a counterattack in overtime. Chad Gilmer's shot on goal was stopped, but Frisch was there to bang home the rebound.

Xavier, ranked sixth in Class 2A, improved to 5-8-1 overall and 5-7 in the MVC.

Kennedy fell to 7-7, 6-6. The Cougars, ranked No. 14 in Class 3A, play their third game in as many days Saturday when they travel to North Scott.

Bertroche and Butler score 2 goals apiece in rout

DUBUQUE -- Eric Bertroche and Nolan Butler scored to goals apiece to power No. 14 Kennedy past Dubuque Hempstead, 4-0, Tuesday in MVC boys soccer.

Bertroche got the Cougars off to a strong start with a goal in the eighth minute. Butler's goal in the 22nd minute boosted Kennedy's lead to 2-0, a margin it held at halftime.

Butler bagged his second goal in the 50th minute and Bertroche followed with his second goal in the 55th minute.

Andrew Sheeley had two assists. Butler, Brandon Holmes, Brigham Stewart and Nick Waterhouse also had assists.

Kennedy is 7-5 overall, 5-4 in the MVC.

Kennedy kicks Prairie in shootout

Ben Feltes made a key save in the PK shootout Tuesday night to help Kennedy trim Prairie, 1-0, in a Mississippi Valley Conference soccer game at Prairie.

Neither team scored in regulation or overtime. The Cougars made all five of their penalty kicks and Feltes stopped Prairie's third kicker to provide the difference.

Kennedy is 6-3 overall, 5-2 in the MVC. Prairie is 5-6, 3-4.

Cougars kick No. 10 Cedar Falls, 2-1

WATERLOO - The Cedar Rapids Kennedy boys soccer team won a laugher and a squeaker Saturday.

The Cougars walloped Waterloo East, 20-0, in their morning contest at the Cedar Valley Soccer Complex in Waterloo. After a short rest, the Cougars trimmed No. 10 Cedar Falls, 2-1, on goals by Killian Magee and Brigham Stewart.

Reid Botkin led the barrage for Kennedy (5-3) against Waterloo East with four goals. Nolan Butler scored three times, while Grant Sheeley, Eric Bertroche, Tyler Pape and Brandon Holmes scored twice. Sameeullah Jung, Nate Waterhouse, Nick Waterhouse, Nick Scharf and Stewart had the other goals in the 20-0 mismatch.

Nolan Butler and Ryan Walker collected assists for the Cougars in the victory over Cedar Falls.
