Holiday wishes from the Metro Sports Report

The Metro Sports Report would like to extend 1,931,136 holiday wishes to all of our friends this year.

That's how many pageviews we've had since we launched our website on Jan. 3, 2011, as of 5 p.m. on Christmas Eve.

Mike Koolbeck and I did not have the time to send 1,931,136 cards and thank-you notes to all of you, so please accept these friendly words instead from the MSR co-owners.

We began this website by covering the seven major high schools in Cedar Rapids and Marion. We added Cedar Valley Christian as our eighth high school in August of 2011 and added Kirkwood Community College to the lineup this past November.

We'll continue to look for ways to grow and expand in 2013 as we seek to serve an ever-growing audience.

At this time of holiday cheer, we'd like to extend a few special wishes as we move into Year 3 with the Metro Sports Report.

First and foremost, we wish that all the teams and athletes in Cedar Rapids and Marion stay healthy in 2013. We've had more than enough knee injuries and broken bones, so please be careful out there.

Here are a few more holiday wishes to pass along:

1) We hope Ryan Sweeney finds a new major league ballclub that appreciates his talent and gives him a chance to play on a regular basis in 2013.

2) We hope Tom Polehna is able to build support for his dream of installing an air-supported fabric dome along the Cedar River in the southeast side of town for people of all ages to use for indoor sports and recreation.

3) We hope Jack Roeder and the good people with Prospect Meadows get the financial support they need to build a major baseball and softball complex just north of Marion.

4) We hope the Kirkwood Community College basketball teams will get bigger crowds at Johnson Hall this winter. They play an exciting brand of ball at Kirkwood that's great fun to watch.

5) We hope the Iowa High School Athletic Association will find a new date for the state dual meet wrestling tournament so teams will use their top wrestlers, instead of resting them for the traditional state tournament that begins the day after the dual meet tournament ends.

6) We hope Jarrod Uthoff finds an important role with the Iowa Hawkeyes next season after sitting out this year as a transfer from Wisconsin. The Jefferson grad has a great deal of talent and could help the Hawks.

7) Likewise, we hope Wes Washpun enjoys a good career with the University of Northern Iowa basketball team season after sitting out as a transfer from Tennessee. The Washington grad is an exciting player who can ignite a crowd and his team.

8) We hope there are numerous state titles on the horizon for our Metro teams and athletes. There's nothing better than seeing local kids succeed at the highest levels.

9) We hope more fans will attend high school events in 2013. Some of the crowds have been good so far this season, but they can always be better.

10) Most of all, we wish everyone Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year as you spend precious time with family and friends.
