Haar has grand time as Kernels win

Kernels third baseman Bryan Haar socked a three-run homer in the first inning and belted a grand slam in the second Saturday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium, but it began raining and the umpires interrupted the game in the fourth inning before it was an official contest.

Haar wasn't sure if his grand feat would count or not if the game had been called off.

"Guys brought it up, jokingly: 'Oh, good game, it's not going to count,'" he said, smiling. "It was a good game, though."

It was a very good game.

They resumed playing for a few more innings after a 31-minute delay and the Kernels topped Clinton, 9-5, before the soggy affair ended in the top of the seventh inning after another 30-minute delay.

The home runs would have counted even if they had not resumed playing in the fourth inning. It simply would have been a suspended game, to be finished later.

Both of Haar's home runs and all seven of his RBIs are now officially in the books.

"I had a couple of games like that in high school, but not since then. So it's been six years now," he said.

Haar blasted a long three-run shot to left-center in the first inning on an off-speed pitch to give the Kernels a 3-0 lead.

He belted a fastball to dead-center in the second inning with the bases loaded, with the ball barely getting over the 400-foot sign as Clinton center fielder Aaron Barbaso leaped and tried to bring it back in the park.

"He went up to rob it and I thought he caught it," said Haar. "I thought he came down with it. And then the umpire signaled home run, so that was pretty cool."

Haar struck out in his third and final at-bat.

"The guy pitched me pretty well. He hit the corner," said Haar. "There's nothing you can do about that."

Haar, 24, is hitting .267 with 10 homers and 43 RBIs.

Haar represented the Kernels at the Midwest League All-Star game last week, but was unexpectedly asked to play first base instead of third base. He has a first baseman's mitt and has appeared there for the Kernels, but did not pack his mitt for the all-star contest.

"I didn't bring it," he said. "They said we have three third basemen and one first baseman. They asked me if I played first. I said, yeah, in college I played it all the time."

Haar, from San Diego, played at the University of San Diego. He was selected by the Minnesota Twins in the 34th round of the 2012 draft.

Bo Altobelli hit his first home run for the Kernels in the second inning as Cedar Rapids took an 8-1 lead. Kernels starter Ryan Eades (5-7) allowed two home runs himself and was nicked for five runs (four earned) in five innings, but it was good enough to get the victory.

A festive crowd of 3,720 fans packed the ballpark, but only a smattering of folks remained when the game was finally called off. Those who remained got to see eight or 10 Kernels sliding and belly-flopping on the wet tarp to entertain themselves and the fans.
