9 Metro players make INA all-state

Nine Metro players have been named to the Iowa Newspaper Association all-state baseball teams.

You could put a full team on the field with the nine players with Sammy Lizarraga of Kennedy on the mound, Maverick Miller of Marion at catcher, Nic Mougin of Prairie at first base, Cal Clark of Prairie at second base, Zach Daniels of Kennedy at shortstop, Zach Larson of Jefferson at third base, Trey Beckman of Prairie in left field, Spencer VanScoyoc of Jefferson in center field and Manny Jeffery of Linn-Mar in right field.

Daniels, Lizarraga, Van Scoyoc and Clark were named first team all-state in Class 4A. Beckman and Mougin were second-team selections in 4A, while Larson and Jeffery were third-team picks in 4A. Maverick was a second-team selection in 3A.

Daniels, Larson and Clark were tabbed as infielders. All three of them played shortstop for their high school team. Beckman and Jeffery were selected as outfielders. VanScoyoc, an outfielder and pitcher, made the club as a utility player. Lizarraga was picked as a pitcher, Mougin was honored at first base and Miller made the team at catcher.

Daniels hit .519 with two home runs and 27 RBIs. Lizarraga went 8-0 on the mound with a 0.70 ERA, with 72 strikeouts and only nine walks in 50 innings. VanScoyoc hit .407 with two home runs and 17 RBIs. He was 5-1 with a 0.64 ERA as a pitcher. Clark hit .448 with 30 RBIs.

 

Beckman hit .440 with one home run and 26 RBIs. Mougin hit .413 with two homers and 28 RBIs. Miller hit .389 with 30 stolen bases.

Larson hit .389 with one home run and 29 RBIs. Jeffery hit .387 with two homers and 22 RBIs.
