The Iowa Women’s Softball League will begin its third season Sunday, with all the games this year at Busse Field at Mount Mercy University.
There are four teams in the IWSL, which is the only summer college softball league in Iowa. The season will last for eight weeks, with two doubleheaders each Sunday at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
The playing dates are June 2-9-16-23 and July 7-14-21-28.
Thirty-three colleges from 10 states have players in the league this summer. There is a blend of players from NCAA, NAIA and Junior College programs, all playing side-by-side on the same teams.
There are eight players from Mount Mercy, seven from Luther and six from the University of Northern Iowa. The Iowa Hawkeyes, Kirkwood Eagles, Simpson and Grand View have four players in the league.
The Hawkeye Convenience Stores are the title sponsor for the IWSL and also serve as one of the team sponsors. The other team sponsors are Ironside Apparel, Emil’s Hideaway and Bosch Financial. The silver medal sponsors are TSF Structures and Adcraft Printing.
Cory Kleman and Dana McFarlane are the co-head coaches for Ironside Apparel. Maddy Ryan, who broke her leg playing softball for Coe this season, will be the head coach of Bosch Financial while she recovers from her injury. Willie Guy is coaching Emil’s Hideaway and David Drahn is the head coach of Hawkeye Convenience Stores.
