Josiah Coleman commits to Iowa Western C.C.

Cedar Rapids Kennedy senior Josiah Coleman has accepted an offer to join the men's basketball team at Iowa Western Community College in Council Bluffs, he said Sunday.

Coleman, a 6-foot-4 swingman, averaged 9.6 points and 6.3 rebounds for the Cougars this year. He missed the first 10 games of the season while serving a suspension for violating school rules.

Coleman said he received NCAA Division I scholarship offers from Wyoming, Coppin State and Sacramento State, but acknowledged he is not academically eligible to accept a major college scholarship and play at the Division I level next season.

"No, I wouldn't have been," he said. "It was a little rough my sophomore year (at Kennedy). I have some things to work on that deal with some schooling and the consistency of my game."

Coleman said he plans to spend two years at Iowa Western and transfer to a Division I school after that, if possible.

Iowa Western finished 25-8 this past season for Coach Jim Morris. Coleman said he was recruited as a swingman, with an opportunity to play off-guard if he improves his ballhandling.

"He's recruiting me as a '3' guard, but if I work on my handle he said there's no reason I can't improve and go to the '2' guard," Coleman said. "That's what I have to work on, dribbling more."

Kennedy finished 16-7 last season and reached the finals of the Class 4A substate tournament.
