Some late-spring basketball thoughts

Yes, I know the temperature outside Tuesday afternoon nearly read in the triple-digits, but it's not too early to talk some hoops.

First off, let's look back at a big "summer" weekend of basketball here in town with the Corridor Basketball Classic. Twenty-four teams descended on Kennedy, Jefferson and Xavier high school's to "kick the tires" so to speak on next year's squads.

Coaches could take a look at their returning and incoming talent for the 2012-13 season. Although somewhat limited as far as interaction with the kids, these team tournaments are still important to programs, and especially programs with brand new coaches.

Both Washington and Xavier have new men at the helm starting next season, Adam Sanchez with the Warriors, and former Warrior all-stater Ryan Luehrsmann at Xavier. It's a chance for these coaches to implement their thoughts and ideas with their new teams, and to help with the ultra important area of team chemistry before practices begin for real next November.

By the way, a word of warning: don't read anything into the scores or records of summer tournaments, positively or negatively. Many teams have players missing or sharing time with baseball or other sports that have camps taking place during the summer. It is just a good way to knock the rust off of the players that can be there to play some hoops and get an early start on the year.

Speaking of high school basketball summer tournaments, Dubuque Senior may want to rethink its involvement in an early summer tournament for the future. The Rams, who on paper look to return perhaps the No. 1 challenger to defending Class 4A state champion Iowa City West, suffered a major blow.

Josh Weeber, a terrificĀ  all-MVC player for the Rams the past couple of years ruptured an Achilles tendon and will be out for an undisclosed amount of time. No one is saying exactly how long Weeber will be out, but that type of injury can take up to a year of recovery time.

Put the devastating injury to Weeber together with the fact that guard Domen Zevnik will not be back, and Senior suddenly has lost a big part of its firepower from a year ago. Zevnik, per rules put forth by the IHSAA on foreign exchange students, can not attend Senior again this year, so instead he has transferred to Wahlert and will have a big impact on the Golden Eagles this winter.

They still need to play the games, but suddenly Iowa City West's bid for two 4A crowns in a row looks brighter.

And finally, the NCAA has done an about-face on a very controversial rule. For many years since the technology has been available, NCAA men's basketball coaches have had a specific period of the year when they can call or text potential recruits. As of last Friday, that rule is no more.

Now, after the completion of their sophomore year, potential recruits can be called or texted on an unlimited basis. While this certainly makes life easier for the NCAA and its enforcement of the rule, it certainly opens a can of worms. What is to say that a coach cannot constantly bombard a recruit day and night to get him to attend their school and play for their team?

I will say I like the rule because it brings about more one-on-one dialogue between the coach and player and leaves out the middle man, be that an AAU coach or whoever the case may be. But this will probably open up a whole new set of problems that a recruit and his family have to deal with during a very difficult part of their lives.

I would still love to see a recruit's high school coach become more involved in the process. Still, it could prove to be a move in the right direction...if not abused by some coaches and programs.

I have to think somewhere Kelvin Sampson is laughing!
