New playoff system spells controversy

College football has another playoff system to deal with.

This week, the college commissioners and college presidents met in Washington, D.C., and after short presentations approved a four-team college football playoff starting with the 2014 season.

With that said, the bowl people also had their games saved. How unusual.

The formula for selecting the teams will be similar to the selection process for the NCAA basketball tournament, which brings to mind that wonderful word: Controversy.

But I think the college presidents realized the old saying, "As long as I'm in the forefront, plus or minus, please spell my name right."

The semifinals will be at rotating bowl sites that will involve the Sugar, Orange, Rose and Fiesta bowls. Yes, the biggies are all in play.

There aren't many bones left over, if any, for the Boise States of the world. This is a power conference deal that is going to bring in not millions, but billions, over a period of time. And it will be interesting to see how all of this plays out.

Looking down the road, I am sure the future will hold another play-in game or the addition of two more teams or an expanded field that might be unimaginable.

But remember, the pressure will always be there from other institutions to expand the playoffs.

Hope you have a good time.

I AM SURE every columnist in the country has taken a look at the Sandusky decision and come to the conclusion, "I don't want to write about that."

But since we are talking about big-time athletics, the interesting story will be, since this is a classic case of non-institutional control, how deep the NCAA will go into its deliberations about lack of institutional control at Penn State.

If they go deep enough, the Big Ten might be without a member from Pennsylvania for a long period of time. That's one you can stay tuned for.

ANOTHER NOTE: Congratulations to Arizona on winning the NCAA baseball championship. From all of the reports coming out of Omaha since the Wildcats went through the tournament without losing a game with a young team, look for the "Big A" to be back in the "Big O" next year.
