Handing out hardware for 2011-12

It ended quickly, as it always does.

With the raising of an umpire's right hand, the 2011-12 sports season ended for the Metro teams about 10 days ago at Principal Park in Des Moines at the State Baseball Tournament when Kennedy fell to Fort Dodge in the semifinals.

What started in hot weather last August on a golf course, ended on a ball diamond, also in very hot weather.

Now that the 2011-12 sports season has officially gone into the books, it is time for some recollection. Over the next few weeks, I will take a look back at how the schools fared for the year and then the top stories in the Metro area. I did this last year and get a lot of positive feedback, so we will try it once again.

For this week we take a look at the results for the top class of schools in the state and see which school's athletic department was the best for 2011-12 in both boys and girls sports. I will also include Xavier's 2A soccer title just like a year ago. And like last year at this time, I base my results on a point system. Four points for a championship, three for second place, two for third and one point for fourth. If there wasn't a consolation game, each school gets two points for finishing tied for third place.

What I found this year was balance. Twenty-one schools scored points this year on the boys side and 23 on the girls side.

But one school stood out clearly on the boys side, while more balance took place on the girls side of the ledger.

Without further ado ... here we go.

Looking at our unscientific data from above, it points to something we pretty much already knew. Iowa City West had a monster year in athletics!

It was a good, but certainly not a banner year for the Metro big schools. We had a couple of state titles, but more near misses. But more on that next week when we take a look back at some of the top teams and stories in the Metro area from the past year.
