Lassen plans to sign with Kirkwood

Linn-Mar High School senior Matt Lassen plans to sign a letter-of-intent Tuesday to play basketball at Kirkwood Community College, according to Linn-Mar Coach Chris Robertson.

Lassen, a 6-foot-5 swingman, averaged 10.6 points and 3.1 rebounds for the Lions this season and was named first-team on the Mississippi Valley Conference honor squad.

Lassen originally committed to Albany (N.Y.) as a junior, but changed his mind about attending the NCAA Division I school this winter and began looking for a new destination.

He was invited to visit Florida Gulf Coast, but the coach who led that team to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament this year left to become the head coach at Southern Cal.

Lassen was invited to join the Drake Bulldogs as a walk-on next season and also received interest from the University of Northern Iowa.

Lassen suffered a severe concussion as a junior and played only nine games for Linn-Mar that season, averaging 10.3 points. He returned late in the year and helped the Lions reach the semifinals of the state tournament.

Lassen was a reserve on the Linn-Mar varsity as a sophomore during the 2010-11 campaign when the Lions won the Class 4A state title with a perfect 26-0 record.
