Pleasant Valley ends Linn-Mar hoops streak

BETTENDORF - It'll be a difficult feat for any school to match.

For the past nine years, with names such as Jason Bohannon, Jordan Printy, Grant Gibbs and Marcus Paige, Linn-Mar's boys basketball team has been a fixture at the Class 4A state tournament in March. The Lions' state-record streak came to a halt Friday night.

Even with Austin Esters, its second-leading scorer sidelined for the season with a broken right leg, Pleasant Valley stymied Linn-Mar 54-40 in a substate semifinal at PV High School.

Lions belt Hempstead in substate opener

No strangers to the state tournament, the Linn-Mar boys suddenly look like they might be contenders again.

They’ve been to Des Moines a record nine straight times (and grabbed three titles during that span). But when they started out the season with a 2-and-6 record, it appeared this might be the year they stayed home.

Coach Chris Robertson’s Lions have now won 11 of their last 14 games. And the way they played for all but three minutes of Monday night’s 65-49 substate romp over Dubuque Hempstead, they looked invincible.

Uhlir stands tall for Lions in win over Cougars

Listed at 5-foot-10, Linn-Mar reserve point guard Nic Uhlir may stand that tall on his tippy-toes.

But the sophomore shooting specialist is playing big at just the right time.

Averaging just 4.8 points a game in part-time play, he pumped in 17 Tuesday with five 3-pointers in a 65-41 win over Dubuque Wahlert.

He followed that up Friday night at home with another team-high 16 points on four more long-range bombs to lead the Lions past Kennedy, 57-42.
