Kennedy girls rout Linn-Mar

Kennedy Coach Tony Vis was hard-pressed to find fault with anything his girls did Tuesday night after they demolished Linn-Mar 74-41 on their home court.

“Well,” he said after a pause, “we fouled a lot.”

Even that mild criticism was tempered, however.

“When you play as aggressive as we did tonight, I can live with that.”

In a match-up of previously unbeaten teams, this one was really no contest.

Big 3rd period sends Lions past IC West

It took a massive comeback in the third quarter to rally Linn-Mar from an 18-9 halftime deficit and send the Lions past Iowa City West Friday night in girls basketball at Linn-Mar.

Linn-Mar outscored Iowa City West 26-9 in the third quarter, and used a deliberate offense down the stretch to salt away a 42-32 victory over the Women of Troy.

“They made a run in that third quarter and we didn’t respond.  They made some key outside jumpers and we forced some things on our end of the floor,” lamented Iowa City West Coach B.J. Mayer.

Sommer sisters step up for Lions

It was a hot Sommer night Tuesday in the Linn-Mar gym with the outside temperature sitting in the teens.

With the Lions trailing 38-37 entering the final quarter of their season-opener against Keokuk, the Sommer twins took over. They combined to score 13 of the Lions’ 17 points in the period, and were part of a stifling defense that resulted in a 54-45 victory at the Linn-Mar gym.

“It’s like it’s that twin thing,” said Linn-Mar girls basketball coach Michael Brandt of senior guards Kristie and Katie Sommer. “They just seemed to know when we needed them to turn it on.”

Jaime Printy returns to Linn-Mar as coach

Jaime Printy set 14 school records during her prep basketball career at Linn-Mar High School and was named the 2009 Gatorade Player of the Year.

Now the former University of Iowa star has returned to Linn-Mar, this time as an assistant coach with the girls basketball team.

"Growing up around basketball, I always thought I wanted to stay around the sport because I love it so much," Printy said last week. "I always had coaches who influenced me in positive ways and I thought it would be awesome some day to give back and be able to have an impact on younger kids. I'm really excited about it."
