Lions' upset bid spoiled by No.10 Wahawks

WATERLOO - No.10 Waterloo West came storming back in the fourth quarter to foil Linn-Mar's upset bid, 42-37, Tuesday night in a Mississippi Valley Conference girls basketball game.

Linn-Mar battled back from a five-point halftime deficit to take a 29-25 lead after three quarters. The Lions were outscored 17-8 in the fourth quarter.

Mykaela Brandt scored 14 points to lead Linn-Mar (7-10, 4-5).

Kate Letkewicz led West (12-4, 6-2) with 19 points.

Strauel leads Linn-Mar girls to win

Sara Strauel scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead Linn-Mar to a 62-56 win over Pleasant Valley in a nonconference girls basketball game Saturday at Linn-Mar.

Mykaela Brandt added 11 points and Courtney Major had 10, including 7-of-7 from the free-throw line.

Sydney Dwyer scored 20 points for Pleasant Valley.

Linn-Mar is 7-9.

Saints surge past Linn-Mar girls

Try as she might, Linn-Mar’s Mykaela Brandt could not beat the Xavier girls Friday.

She came close, single-handedly bringing her team back from a runaway to within three points late in the third quarter.

But then the music died for the visiting Lions.

The Saints marched off a 20-2 run over a seven-minute period, waltzing down the stretch to a 52-37 victory.

City High routs Linn-Mar girls

Mickey Hansche and Haley Lorenzen scored 18 points apiece and No.6 Iowa City High rolled past Linn-Mar, 60-32, Friday night in a Mississippi Valley Conference girls basketball game at Linn-Mar.

Iowa City High improved to 13-2 overall and 6-1 in the Mississippi Division.Linn-Mar is 6-8, 4-4 in the Valley Division.

“We’re a work in progress on defense,” City High Coach Bill McTaggart said. “The key to our victory was that we played better defense tonight and Linn-Mar was cold in their shooting.”

Linn-Mar girls dial long distance in win

Linn-Mar raced out to a 17-6 lead and rolled past Dubuque Wahlert, 52-35, Tuesday night in a girls basketball game at Linn-Mar.

Linn-Mar knocked down 10 3-pointers. Courtney Major had four treys and led the Lions with 16 points. Mykaela Brandt had three treys and 15 points.

The game did not count in the Mississippi Valley Conference standings.
