Linn-Mar - Baseball

No. 1 Cougars, Lions headed for early showdown

The Kennedy Cougars are ranked No. 1 and the Linn-Mar Lions look like they have the ingredients to make a run for the top as well this year.

They'll clash Tuesday in the semifinals of the Bob Vrbicek Metro Baseball Tournament at the Linn-Mar diamond at approximately 7 p.m.

Alex Hayden struck out 14 batters as the top-ranked Cougars blanked Washington, 4-0, in the opening game of the tournament Monday night to spoil Tony Lombardi's debut as the new head coach of the Warriors.

Linn-Mar scored 11 runs in the first inning against Jefferson and pounded the J-Hawks, 15-2, in five innings in the nightcap.

Kennedy was a little surprised to see itself in the No. 1 spot when the Class 4A preseason rankings were issued Sunday night.

"Honestly, I wasn't sure we were the No. 1 team on 42nd Street, because Xavier is really, really good," said Kennedy Coach Bret Hoyer. "And in the Metro, we have some fantastic teams.

"I think that's a compliment to the success we've had over the last few years. That's more of a tribute to the kids that graduated last year and some of the key people we have coming back."

The Cougars won the Class 4A state title in 2010 and reached the quarterfinals of the state tournament last season, finishing with a 31-9 record. Austin Christensen, the 2011 Gatorade Player of the Year for Kennedy, graduated and joined the baseball program at Nebraska. The Cougars also lost their double-play combination of Griffin Michael and
Terrell Sykes, so the No. 1 ranking came as somewhat of a surprise.

"That's nice that they ranked us that high," said Hoyer. "It certainly puts a target on our backs. And we certainly hope to be that good at the end of the year."

The Linn-Mar Lions will be aiming at that target Tuesday night in the semifinals. The Lions came out swinging and sent 15 batters to the plate in the first inning against Jefferson when they scored their 11 runs.

Michael Redmond collected a pair of doubles in the first inning and was 3-for-3 after two innings with four RBIs. Meanwhile, lefthander Jacob Stolley mowed down the J-Hawks with seven strikeouts in five innings.

"That's a great way to start off," said Stolley. "Like Coach Lechner said, it's the best first game he's ever seen."

The Lions hit line drives all over the ballpark in the first inning.

"It was great," said Redmond. "We were really excited going into this game. I was a little nervous, with first-game jitters or whatever. But we came out and we attacked early in the count and got our confidence up."

Hayden was nearly unhittable in the first game for Kennedy. He went 6 1/3 innings and allowed only two hits, an infield single by A.J. Puk and an opposite-field double by Noah Dostal that hugged the left-field line.

Hayden left after throwing 97 pitches. He struck out two batters in the first, second, third and sixth innings and fanned three batters in the fourth and fifth innings with an 87 mph fastball and sharp curveball.

"It felt good. I was hitting my spots pretty good, I thought," said Hayden, an all-state pitcher in 2011 who will play at Iowa Central Community College next year.

Hayden relied exclusively on his fastball against the first seven batters, then began mixing in the curveball with great success. "They weren't hitting the fastball," he said. "Then they started catching up to the fastball and fouling a couple off, so I starting throwing curveballs."

Hoyer liked what he saw of his top pitcher.

"We saw that at times last year," said Hoyer. "We just need him to be more consistent and follow that up next time and keep improving."

Kennedy collected only four hits against Washington southpaw Grant Dostal, who pitched a complete game for the Warriors. The Cougars also committed a couple of baserunning mistakes, but Hayden was too much for Washington.

Linn-Mar scored two runs in the second inning for an early 13-0 lead against Jefferson. The J-Hawks scored twice in the top of the third, but the Lions responded with two more runs in the bottom of the third for the 15-2 bulge.

Linn-Mar was not ranked in the preseason poll, but the Lions appear to have a strong club. "The possibilities are endless, I think," said Stolley. "The ultimate goal is go to state and win state."

The Lions could make an early statement against No. 1 Kennedy Tuesday night. "It will be fun," said Redmond. "We're just looking forward to everybody we play."

Linn-Mar - Baseball

Lions are arm-strong on the mound

Pitching experience provides the focus for high expectations at Linn-Mar in 2012.

The Lions finished 22-18 last season, with 19 of those pitching wins returning. Nate Greve (6-1, 3.67) will lead what appears to be a solid rotation that also includes Jake Stolley (4-4, 5.15), Casey Brown (4-1, 4.73), Justin Wyant (2-4, 3.76) and Keaton Blackford (2-4, 5.02).

Offensively the Lions face the challenge of inexperience. They return only three players who had at least 75 plate appearances.

Pitching is the key ingredient, so Coach Chad Lechner will have to rely on the mound early and develop the offense as the season plays out. The Lions have the athletes and will
develop that needed offense.

Prairie earns date with No.2 Mason City in substate finals

The Cedar Rapids Prairie baseball team might as well give the other team a few runs at the start of each game. It's a risky formula, but it seems to work.

The Hawks came from behind to defeat Waterloo West in the first round of the Class 4A substate tournament on Friday and they did it again Monday night against Linn-Mar.

Prairie yielded four quick runs in the top of the first inning against Linn-Mar, but showed resiliency and battled back to top the Lions, 5-4, in the substate semifinals at Prairie.

“Any other day I think I would have been a little uptight and nervous, but when we got down it kind of took the pressure off of us,” said Prairie Coach Matt Thede. “It was almost like what do we have to lose? We might as well go out and hit the ball and throw some more strikes.”

Prairie (26-15) advanced to face second-ranked Mason City (32-9) in the substate finals Wednesday night in Mason City. The winner of that game will qualify for the Class 4A state tournament that starts next Wednesday in Des Moines.

Linn-Mar got things going in the first inning as it got back-to-back singles by the first two hitters. Cleanup hitter Jordan Strochschien drew a walk. That brought up Jeremy Danover, who nailed a bases-clearing double to left field to give the Lions a 3-0 lead. Keaton Blackford singled to drive in Danover and make it 4-0.

“I kind of struggled the first inning,” said Prairie pitcher Dustin Carlson.

Prairie answered in the bottom of the first by scoring two runs. Tyler Votroubek drew a bases-loaded walk and Carlson hit a grounder to the second baseman, scoring a runner from third.

Carlson managed to put the iffy first inning behind him. He went back to the mound and quieted the Lions’ bats. Carlson allowed only one more hit after the first inning and held the Lions scoreless the rest of the way during his five-inning stint.

“I was mainly throwing a straight fastball the first inning, so I tried to mix in a two-seamer to throw them off a little bit,” he said.

Chaz Boots led off the second inning for Prairie with a double and scored on an RBI groundout by Brennan Hammer, pulling the Hawks within 4-3. D.J. Utley roped a base hit and Brayton Carlson doubled to left, scoring Utley and tying the game 4-4.

Prairie took a 5-4 lead in the third inning. Votroubek led off with a single, followed by a walk to Dustin Carlson. Tyler Butz sent the runners to second and third with a sacrifice bunt. Boots hit a sharp grounder to the second baseman for an out, but Votroubek scored from third for the go-ahead run.

“I knew we had the offense to come back,” said Carlson.

Bryce Alberts pitched the sixth inning for Prairie and Anthony Gagliardi closed the game in the seventh.

“To shut those guys down for six more innings says a lot about our pitching staff because they have a great hitting club,” said Thede.

Prairie will be the underdog at Mason City on Wednesday, but the Hawks are eager for the challenge.

“We play a really good team, but we are pretty battle-tested right now so we are just going to go out and hit the ball and play some good defense,” said Dustin Carlson.

Linn Mar finished the season at 22-18.

Linn-Mar - Baseball

Lions walk off with substate win

The Linn-Mar Lions hit the baseball hard all night.

But the Lions couldn’t come up with that one big hit to push the go-ahead runs across the plate.

That changed in the bottom of the seventh inning when sophomore Austin Stroschein came through with a two-out, two-run single through the right side that gave the Lions a 4-3 walk-off win against Cedar Falls in a Class 4A substate first round game at Linn-Mar.

“It feels great, I’m speechless,” said Stroschein, who went 3-for-4. “We hit it hard all night, it was just my turn. I got my pitch and put the bat on the ball.”

Linn-Mar (22-17) advances to Monday's semifinals against either Prairie or Waterloo East. The latter's game Friday night at Mason City was rained out and will be played Saturday, weather permitting. If Mason City wins, Linn-Mar plays at Prairie on Monday. If East wins, the Lions host the Trojans on Monday.

Cedar Falls (15-21) scored a pair of runs in the first inning on Matt Klinehart's two-run home run. Linn-Mar scored runs in the first and second innings to tie the game. Both runs scored on sacrifice flies, the first by Jeremy Danover and the second by Aaron Hunter. However, the Lions left the bases loaded in the bottom of the first.

Cedar Falls reclaimed the lead, 3-2, with a run in the third. Again it was a sacrifice fly, this one by Shawn Hagarty, that scored the run.

Lions’ starter Jake Stolley settled in after the three early runs. He allowed just one hit after the third inning. Stolley was pulled in the seventh after a walk and received a no decision. He  finished the game with seven strikeouts.

Meanwhile, the Linn-Mar offense was having trouble coming up with the big hit. The Lions threatened in every inning after scoring in the second. They left seven runners stranded in innings three through six.

The Lions got their last chance to get the tying or winning run in the seventh when, with one out, they put runners on second and third off Cedar Falls starter Andy Kloos. Tigers Coach Jack Sole elected to go to the bullpen and brought in junior Jake Gallu to try to get the save.

After an intentional walk loaded the bases, Gallu got a big strikeout for the second out. The strikeout brought Austin Stroschein to the plate as the Lions' last chance. Stroschein delivered on the first pitch, driving the ball into right field and bringing home the tying and winning runs.

“We hadn’t given up, but after a game played that well and having hard hit balls not fall, in the back of my mind I was thinking what I would have to say to the kids,” Linn-Mar Coach Chad Lechner said. “It was just going to be about not getting that one big two-out hit, but Austin got it.”
