West's 4-run 9th pins double-loss on Lions

Iowa City West scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning of the nightcap and swept Linn-Mar, 7-0 and 8-6, in a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader Monday night at Linn-Mar.

Kyle Mortensen, Austin Stroschein and Brandt Ollinger had two hits apiece to lead Linn-Mar's 10-hit attack in the nightcap. Jimmy Roth had a two-run double.

Linn-Mar (5-6, 2-2) was held to three hits in the opener. Declan Doyle drove in four runs in the opener and two in the nightcap for West (8-2, 4-1).

Stroschein drives in 6 in Lions' split

BETTENDORF - Linn-Mar scored eight runs in the second inning of the nightcap and roared past Pleasant Valley, 14-8, to salvage a split of a nonconference baseball doubleheader.

Pleasant Valley scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to win the opener, 7-6.

Austin Stroschein had three hits, including a home run, and drove in five runs to lead the Lions (5-4) in the nightcap. Jimmy Roth was 4-for-4 and drove in three runs. Caleb Reimer had three hits. The Lions collected 17 hits.

Roth powers Lions to sweep of Rams

Jimmy Roth had four hits and drove in three runs to lead Linn-Mar to a doubleheader sweep of Dubuque Senior, 6-1 and 5-4, Friday night in Mississippi Valley Conference baseball doubleheader.

Roth was 2-for-3 in each game. He hit a solo home run and had an RBI single in the opener, and added an RBI single in the nightcap.

Austin Stroschein allowed one run over four innings and picked up the win in the opener. Justin Wyant held Dubuque senior hitless over the final three innings, walked one and struck out six.

Linn-Mar tops Kennedy for 3rd place

The Linn-Mar Lions defeated Kennedy, 7-4, in the consolation game for third place Thursday in the Bob Verbicek Metro Baseball Tournament at the Linn-Mar complex.

Ben Hilsenbeck allowed two unearned runs in five innings to collect the victory for Linn-Mar (2-1). He struck out five batters and allowed just two hits.

Austin Stroschein went 2-for-4 for Linn-Mar and scored two runs. Brandan Ollinger went 2-for-4 and Austin Banks drove in two runs.

Brown's no-hitter sends Saints to finals

Zach Brown cannot touch his toes, but he sure can pitch.

Brown tossed a no-hitter with 12 strikeouts Tuesday night as Xavier blanked Linn-Mar, 4-0, in the semifinals of the Bob Vrbicek Metro Baseball Tournament at the new Linn-Mar complex.

Brown, a senior right-hander, is a strong guy and a good athlete, but he has to bend his knees to reach his toes.
