Greve commits to Barry University

Linn-Mar High School pitcher Nate Greve has committed to play college baseball at Barry University in Miami Shores, Fla., he said Thursday morning.

Greve compiled a 7-3 record with a 1.34 ERA this past season and helped the Lions (29-12) reach the quarterfinals of the Class 4A state tournament.

Greve, a left-hander, struck out 82 batters in 41 2/3 innings and held opponents to a .176 batting average. He also hit .373 for the Lions, but will be a pitcher in college.

Greve attended a baseball camp at Barry last November. They offered him a scholarship a few months ago and he committed on Wednesday.

"They've got what I want to do in college, and they've got a good baseball program," he said.

Greve said he wants to study international business and marketing. He also likes the idea of playing college baseball in Florida.

Greve said he had offers from Morehead State (Ky.), Lindenwood University (Mo.), Union College (Ky.) and Heartland Community College (Ill.).

Barry is an NCAA Division II program that competes in the Sunshine State Conference. The team finished 23-22 last season.

Stolley on IHSBCA all-state 1st team

Alex Hayden capped a brilliant season for the Kennedy High School baseball team Thursday by being named to the 2012 All-State "Super Team" by the Iowa High chool Baseball Coaches Association.

Eleven Metro players were selected for the all-state teams by the IHSBCA, a testament to the talent in the Metro area this year.

Hayden was named as a utility player on the "Super Team," an elite unit that honors the top 15 players in the state, regardless of classification. He compiled an 11-2 record on the mound with a 0.99 ERA, hit .386 with 28 RBIs and excelled at second base.

Cody Bell of Kennedy, Josh Jahlas of Kennedy, Jason Velvick of Prairie, Brennan Hammer of Prairie and Jake Stolley of Linn-Mar were named first team all-state in Class 4A.

Bell hit .466 this season with five homers and 45 RBIs and was selected as a first baseman. Jahlas hit .451 with 57 runs scored and 38 RBIs. He was named as an outfielder.

Velvick was picked as one of the outfielders after hitting .439 with two homers and 24 RBIs. Hammer made the squad as a utility player after excelling on the mound and at the plate. He hit .348 with 25 RBIs and compiled a 7-1 record with a 2.76 ERA. He struck out 63 batters in 45 2/3 innings.

Stolley was named a first team all-state pitcher after going 7-2 with a 1.48 ERA. He fanned 89 batters in 61 1/3 innings.

Adam Lloyd of Kennedy, Chico Lizarraga of Kennedy, Nate Greve of Linn-Mar, Chance Tiedtke of Jefferson and Brayton Carlson of Prairie were named second team all-state in Class 4A.

Lloyd was selected as a pitcher after going 9-2 with a 2.71 ERA. Lizarraga hit .311 for the Cougars with 26 RBIs and established himself as one of the top defensive catchers in the state.

Greve made second team all-state as a utility player. He hit .388 and compiled a 7-3 record on the mound with a 2.12 ERA. He fanned 83 batters in 43 innings.

Tiedtke made the club as an outfielder after hitting .445 with two homers and 34 RBIs. Carlson was named at second base after hitting .355 with five homers and 39 RBIs.

Hayden, Bell, Jahlas, Lloyd, Lizarraga, Stolley, Tiedtke, Velvick and Carlson graduated this year. Greve and Hammer made the club as juniors.

Calvin Mathews, a pitcher for Davis County, was named the Player of the Year.

Metro stars lead East at IHSBCA game

CLINTON -- Jake Stolley of Linn-Mar was the winning pitcher Friday as the Large Schools East team trimmed the Large Schools West, 5-3, on the second day of the IHSBCA All-Star games in Clinton.

Devon Jacobus of Kennedy went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Alex Hayden of Kennedy was 2-for-2. Both Cougars scored a run.

The Large Schools East team lost to Small Schools East, 7-1, on Thursday and carries a 1-1 record into Saturday's action.

Small Schools East edged Small Schools West, 4-2, Friday and has a 2-0 record. The Large Schools West squad is 0-2.

Hayden, Jacobus, Stolley named IHSBCA all-stars

Alex Hayden of Kennedy, Devon Jacobus of Kennedy and Jake Stolley of Linn-Mar have been selected to play in the 2012 IHSBCA All-Star Series in Clinton on Aug. 2-5 as members of the Large Schools East Squad.

Hayden compiled an 11-2 record as Kennedy's top pitcher. He hit .400 and was also the team's starting second baseman.

Jacobus hit cleanup most of the season for the Cougars as they compiled a 33-7 record and reached the semifinals of the Class 4A state tournament. He was Kennedy's top third baseman and played second base when Hayden was pitching.

Stolley compiled a 7-2 record for Linn-Mar and helped the Lions reach the state tournament. He also played first base.

The IHSBCA all-star games will be played in Clinton at the Ashford University Field, home of the Midwest League's Clinton LumberKings.

Stolley, Mattke named academic all-state

Jake Stolley of Linn-Mar and Mack Mattke of Xavier have received Honorable Mention on the IHSBCA Academic All-State Teams.

The 26th All-Academic Team was selected by the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association. The selections were based on outstanding academic, moral and athletic characteristics.

Stolley, a left-handed pitcher and first baseman, plans to enroll at Northwestern University and has been invited to join the baseball team as a walk-on.

Mattke, a first baseman, catcher and pitcher, plans to enroll at Purdue and has been invited to join the ballclub as a walk-on.
