Lions make quick work of Clinton

Wednesdays are scrimmage days for Linn-Mar during the regular season. They are usually more strenuous than the workout the Lions got against Clinton.

Mark Atwater raced 66 yards for a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage to start No. 2 Linn-Mar's 47-0 rout of Clinton in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs Wednesday night at Linn-Mar Stadium.

Linn-Mar advances to Monday's second round. The Lions (10-0) will host Cedar Rapids Washington, which beat Davenport Assumption, 38-35. The Lions drilled the Warriors, 56-7, in a Week 7 game at Kingston Stadium.

Atwater finished with 84 yards and two touchdowns, and also completed all four of his passes for 77 yards and another score. He did all that in the first quarter, which ended with the Lions holding a 27-0 lead.

Lions up to No. 2 in 4A poll

Linn-Mar's football team moved up one spot to No. 2 in the Associated Press Class 4A poll released Monday.

The Lions (9-0) completed the regular season last Friday with a 28-7 win over Xavier. They moved up after previous No. 2 Cedar Falls was upset by Iowa City West, 21-10.

Linn-Mar opens the playoffs Wednesday against unranked Clinton (3-6) at Linn-Mar.

West Des Moines Valley (9-0) remained the top-ranked team in 4A. Southeast Polk (8-1), Bettendorf (8-1) and Ankeny (8-1) complete the top five.

Henry makes the grade as Linn-Mar's star receiver

Andy Henry had to become a better student before he could become a star football player at Linn-Mar High School.

Fortunately for Henry and the Lions, he figured it out in time.

Henry has emerged as one of the top receivers in the state this year and has been a major factor in Linn-Mar's success, which includes a 9-0 record and No. 1 seed for the Class 4A playoffs.

Poor grades almost got in the way.

"But I figured it out," Henry said Sunday after practice. "School got a lot easier. The teachers helped me out a lot. I've matured a lot. Now I'm focused on school and everything."

Forsyth confirms bad news: Wantock broke ankle

The Linn-Mar Lions will have to win the Class 4A state title without tailback Mitch Wantock.

Wantock was injured during Friday night's 28-7 victory over Xavier at Saints Field.

"Unfortunately Mitch did break his ankle," Linn-Mar Coach Bob Forsyth confirmed Saturday.

Wantock carried the ball 122 times for 1,109 yards and nine touchdowns this season, averaging 9.1 yards per carry. He had another 100-yard game against Xavier before breaking his right ankle.

Wantock's injury mars night for Linn-Mar

The Linn-Mar Lions finished the regular season with a 9-and-0 record Friday night and earned a No. 1 seed for the Class 4A playoffs, but the Lions were crying in their locker room after they defeated the Xavier Saints, 28-7.

They were not tears of happiness.

Linn-Mar tailback Mitch Wantock hurt his right ankle late in the third quarter and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. The initial report was not good.

"I'm pretty sure Wantock's ankle is broken," Coach Bob Forsyth said somberly at Saints Field.

Forsyth confirmed on Saturday that Wantock's ankle was broken.

Wantock carried the ball 14 times for 102 yards before he was injured on a running play. That raised his season total to 1,094 yards, but the 6-foot-1, 195-pound senior will be watching from the sidelines when the playoffs start.

Linn-Mar (9-0) will host Clinton (3-6) in the first round of the playoffs Wednesday night. Xavier (5-4) plays at Pleasant Valley (7-2) Wednesday night. Both games start at 7 p.m.
