4 Metro teams ranked in boys soccer

The four premier boys soccer teams in the Metro area are ranked 2-3-4-5 in the polls this week by the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association (IAHSSCA).

The Xavier Saints are ranked No.2 in Class 2A. Kennedy is ranked No. 3, Linn-Mar is No. 4 and Washington is No. 5 in Class 3A, through matches of April 12.

Xavier fell from No. 1 to No. 2 in Class 2A. Norwalk replaced the Saints at the top of the rankings.

Kennedy remained No. 3 in Class 3A, but Linn-Mar and Washington traded spots in the No. 4 and No. 5 spots. Iowa City West is ranked No. 1 in Class 3A, followed by Johnston.

Prairie dropped out of the 3A rankings this week.

1. Iowa City West, 2. Johnston, 3. Kennedy, 4. Linn-Mar, 5. Washington, 6. Bettendorf, 7. Iowa City High, 8. West Des Moines Valley, 9. Ankeny Centennial, 10. Marshalltown, 11. Sioux City West, 12. Ames, 13. Pleasant Valley, 14. Muscatine, 15. Dowling Catholic, 16. Waukee.

CLASS 2A

1. Norwalk, 2. Xavier, 3. Waverly-Shell Rock, 4. Spencer, 5. Dallas Center-Grimes, 6. Pella, 7. Wahlert, 8. Storm Lake, 9. DeWitt Central, 10. Glenwood, 11. Perry, 12. Hudson, 13. Davenport Assumption, 14. Mount Pleasant, 15. Keokuk, 16. Adel.

Lions down Muskies in soccer tourney final

Linn-Mar got a pair of goals from junior Daniel Luzindya in the final and the No. 5 Lions downed Muscatine, 2-0, to capture the Challenger Cup soccer title on Saturday at Linn-Mar Stadium.

Earlier, the Lions downed Center Point-Urbana 10-0 and Davenport Central 1-0 to advance to the title game. Muscatine advanced to the final with a 9-0 win over South Tama and a 3-0 victory over North Scott.

Senior Jared Belin posted all three shutouts in goal for the Lions.

Linn-Mar - Boys Soccer

Lions nip J-Hawks in boys soccer

It took 72 minutes, but the Linn-Mar Lions finally scored and trimmed Cedar Rapids Jefferson in a Mississippi Valley Conference boys soccer meet at the Lower Kingston field in Cedar Rapids on Thursday.

A shot by Kevin Simons was turned away, but Ben Johnson scored on the rebound to give fifth-ranked Linn-Mar a 1-0 victory.

Two other scoring opportunities for Linn-Mar hit the post.

Linn-Mar ranked in boys soccer poll

Five boys soccer teams from the Cedar Rapids Metro area are ranked by the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association in the first poll of the regular season.

The Xavier Saints are the top team in Class 2A.

Kennedy, Washington and Linn-Mar are ranked 3-4-5 in Class 3A,  and the Prairie Hawks are ranked 16th.

Iowa City West is the No.1 team in Class 3A.

Lions, Warriors shine at Musky Classic

MUSCATINE —  The eighth-ranked Linn-Mar Lions and the sixth-ranked Cedar Rapids Washington Warriors won both of their matches at the Muscatine Classic soccer tournament Saturday.

Linn-Mar topped Ankeny, 2-0, on goals by Hunter Wong and Bobby Charlton. Ben Johnson, Noah Ajram and Andrew Brundell collected assists. Jared Belin pitched a shutout in goal.

The Lions defeated Pleasant Valley, 4-1, in their other contest. Daniel Luzindya had two goals. Johnson and Leroy Enzugusi also scored. Johnson picked up three assists. Wong, Jack Ramsey and Darrin Eby also had assists.

Washington blanked Dowling Catholic, 1-0, on a goal by Alex Kennedy and an assist from Augie Bergstrom. The Warriors also blanked Muscatine, 1-0, in a PK Shootout.
