Walker goal sparks Cougars back to state

For much of the season, Kennedy sophomore Ryan Walker has been a playmaker.

In Saturday's Class 3A Substate 4 final against Linn-Mar, Walker took on a new role - goal scorer.

The speedy 5-foot-3 forward broke away from the Lion defense, took a long stretch pass from teammate Reid Botkin and hammered it past Lion keeper Jared Belin with 17:30 remaining for his first tally of the season.

That goal, combined with another three minutes later from Sameeullah Jung and another stellar performance from goalkeeper Nathan Althoff, gave the Cougars a 2-0 victory and their third trip to state in the past four seasons.

Linn-Mar downs Senior in shootout

Linn-Mar made all four of its shots in a penalty kick shootout and beat Dubuque Senior, 3-2, Thursday night in a boys soccer game at Linn-Mar.

Linn-Mar scored both of its goals in regulation on penalty kicks after handballs were called on Senior. Freshman Hunter Wong scored first in the 15th minute. Ben Johnson scored the second late in the second half and it broke a 1-1 tie.

But a slide tackle in the penalty box with 2:08 left in the game resulted in a penalty kick for the Rams. Nolan Howe converted for a 2-2 tie.

Neither team scored in two overtime periods, sending the game to a shootout.

Linn-Mar junior keeper Jared Belin made a save against Senior's first shooter and and another Rams' shot went wide.
