Lions upset by Washington girls in shootout

Annee Cooper's penalty kick goal in a shootout sealed No. 10 Washington's win over No. 5 Linn-Mar in a Mississippi Valley Conference soccer game Tuesday night at Linn-Mar.

The game was tied 0-0 at the end of regulation and through two overtime periods, forcing the shootout.

Washington's Maddi Hines, shooting in the No. 2 spot, put the Warriors ahead in the shootout. Ashley Piper's goal out of the No. 3 spot made it 2-0 Warriors. Linn-Mar cut the lead to 2-1 with a goal from No. 3 shooter Leandra Martins and both teams' No. 4 shooters were thwarted.

That set the stage for Cooper, a freshman. A goal by her and the Warriors win, a miss and Linn-Mar had to connect on its final chance to tie the game and force extra penalty kicks.

Cooper ended the game with her goal.

Washington improved to 4-1 overall and 4-0 in the MVC. Linn-Mar fell to 3-2, 3-2.
