No. 1 IC West escapes Lions' upset bid

No. 9 Linn-Mar could have used one of the four goals it scored in its first game Saturday in its nightcap against No. 1 Iowa City West.

West escaped Linn-Mar, 1-0, in a shootout Saturday afternoon in a girls soccer game at Linn-Mar Stadium.

The Lions roared past Iowa City High, 4-0, Saturday morning. Lindsey Harms, Kristen Thoms, Brinkly Werkman and Madisen Garman all scored goals.

The Lions (4-3, 4-3 Mississippi Valley Conference) and West (7-1, 5-1) were scoreless after regulation, two overtimes and the first round of penalty kicks. But West punched in a goal with its sixth penalty kick, Linn-Mar missed and West escaped.

Two of Linn-Mar's losses have come in shootouts and the other was a one-goal loss to Xavier.

West rebounded from a two-overtime loss to Kennedy suffered Saturday morning.
