Garcia's hat trick sends Lions to state

“Wasn’t that an exciting game?” Steve Dickinson, head coach of Linn-Mar’s girls’ soccer team, asked as his team celebrated on the field Monday night, players taking turns posing with the banner marking their advance to this week’s Class 3A state tournament.

The Lions’ 5-2 win over Cedar Falls was exciting entertainment, and for much of the match closer than the final result. Linn-Mar didn’t lead until early in the second half, but sophomore Olivia Garcia’s hat trick proved the difference.

“When it’s an important game, I feel like my intensity picks up,” Garcia said. “We wanted this really bad, but we were really confident going into this game.”

Young Lions boot Waterloo West, 8-0

The Linn-Mar girls soccer team is young, but these Lions are highly ambitious.

They reached the Class 3A state tournament last year, but lost in the first round. Now they want more. Much more.

The goal is simple.

"To get to the state championship game and win it, for sure," sophomore Jensen Sevening remarked Wednesday night.

The fifth-ranked Lions belted Waterloo West, 8-0, in the regional semifinals Wednesday and will host Jefferson or Cedar Falls in the regional finals Monday night.

No.2 Lions upset by No.5 Bettendorf

Fifth-ranked Bettendorf upset Linn-Mar, 3-1, Thursday in girls soccer at Linn-Mar Stadium.

Emily Soyer scored Linn-Mar's goal. Claire Larson had an assist.

Linn-Mar closed out the regular season with a 13-3 record. The Lions allowed only eight goals all season.

No.2 Lions blank J-Hawks, 2-0

Jensen Sevening and Kayla Kvach scored goals to lead No.2 Linn-Mar past Jefferson, 2-0, Tuesday in girls soccer at Kingston Stadium.

Maddie Saville and Olivia Garcia had assists for the Lions.

Linn-Mar is 13-2. The Lions close out the regular season at home Thursday at 5:15 p.m. against Bettendorf.
